If the picture shows a picture briefly upon power up then goes off after a few seconds, you have a back light fault. It could have a problem in the 24vdc circuit, failing back light inverter board, or a blown CCFL lamp.
i have a 2000ish 32 inch trinitron Wega and i have had the EXACT same problems as you have, except mine was blacking out more and more frequently, but yes if u changes the channel or hit return onto the same channel you're watchin the picture wil come back, but not very long, about the longest it'll show a steady picture is 1/2 hr, but it's usualy going black within every 10-15 mins or so.
I took it to a Sony approved/recommened repair shop and aftet having a look i was told it would cost $200 cd including taxes to replace a 'vacuum tube' or something like that, i wish i could be more specific anout the part. I'm still considering whether or not to go through with the repair. I might just buy a working/used newer Tube Flascreen with HD for another couple hundred dollars. If there was a newer 2003+ 32 or 36" Sony that has a good track record I would love to hear suggestions. I don' trust flat panels, way too mny horror stories, and for every 1 i hear about there's probably 10-20 more.I'll give them another 5 years or so to get their acts together.
On the other had, if i do decide to get my 32" wega fixed i will post the results and the exact pt numbers of the pts used i the repair. Your problem is exactly the same as mine, to the letter. I'm a mechanic by trade, but i have a good feeling they're not going to give me correct pt # until i have payed them to fix it. Or else i'd order the part and install it myself.
What source are you using? If cable, you should only be able to pickup channel 3 or 4 if you're using the box. If there is no antenna, that would be the only other answer if the set checks out...accordianman
If you select the HDMI channel to watch a dvd does it do it then, if not disconnect both ends of the scart lead and reconnect or replace. If the scart lead is not in properly this could happen, when you switch on the player and play a disc your tv will automatically switch to the AV/Scart channel, but you are better off manually turning the TV over to the HDMI Hi-Def channel for DVD.
