Could be one of 3 things - I'll give them in order of most common to least:
1) Brushes - check your brushes, if they are very worn or not contacting the armature well they could be the culprit.
2) Switch - tools with a brake have 1 set of normally open contacts & 1 set of normally closed contacts (the configuration is usually stamped on the switch itself) You will need to disconnect the leads to the switch and test it with a continuity tester - if the switch is your problem the normally closed contacts will show open.
3) Field - lastly (least common but possible) is the field, tools with a brake have 2 separate windings in the field. If the field is the issue there will be one winding in the field that will not have continuity (usually the smaller wires in the field) Again, you will need to disconnect the wiring to the field and test with a continuity tester.

Craftsman 10 compound miter saw. Model 172.243600. Screeching sound when trigger released.

Hello Kenneth Larsen,

Although I am normally LOATH to recommend going
to SEARS (bad personal experiences (many))...
I would suggest in THIS CASE...

That should be the sound of the BLADE BRAKE...
>> (an important SAFETY FEATURE) <<
If the blade is NOT STOPPING on trigger release...

Go to
Water Filters Lawn Garden Appliance Parts

and enter your model number there for parts,
help & live support...

When you get YOUR PARTS or REPAIR estimate
check out OTHER sites for COMPETITIVE pricing...

I personally THINK it is possible for SEARS to
perform adequately... They just need CLOSE
SUPERVISION.

I cut through a stud w/Skil worm drivand the blade was bound up. Now when I try to cut the blade stops on contact with the wood. When I release the trigger the motor keeps turning but not the blade.

It is shot.
What is shot?
You will soon see.
If it were me, I would take it apart and find out what is wrong.
You will probably find out there is a broken part or two inside.
You may also find out that there are no parts available to fix it.
:-(
God bless your efforts.

What would cause the PTO not to disengaged the blades from turning?

A faulty switch if the blades are spinning at full cutting speed
Not cutting the current to the engaged blade clutch so the blades are stil on even when the switch is in the off position.
The blade brakes not gripping the pulleys fully to stop blades so anything brushing against the blade will start them spinning
Or the clutch medium is damaged and is not releasing the blades fully so they spin but slowly when you switch the switch they just slow down get the deck alignment switch for clutch and the wireing to the blades system checked and the braking system for the blades pulleys checked as soon as possible the machine is dangerous
With the blade continuously rotating you risk injury from the blades catching.g you or someone else who's not aware the blades don't stop.etcetera.

Erratic starting circular saw

Sounds to me like you have a bad cord. Clamp the saw to a workbench so that it can start and run safely without you having to hold it. Put tape or a wire tie around the trigger to hold it in. THEN plug it in. Then move the cord around, especially near where it enters the saw. If the saw starts and stops intermittently you have confirmed the bad cord. Good luck.

Blade brake dosen't work right away when switch is released. Takes a couple seconds of slow spin then the brake seems to stop the brake. Suggestions?

All blade brakes take a moment to stop the blade. If it were to engage as soon as the switch were released the inertia of the blade would do damage to the saw. Look at videos of your saw on youtube to ensure it is operating the same as others.

Where is the blade brake on the miter saw

The brake on electric motor driven tools is the field & armature. When running the switch provides power to both sides/poles of the field through the brushes and armature. When you release the switch half of the field is powered pulling the armature to a stop. If your bladed continues to spin when the switch is released, you need to replace the switch. The Ridgid part number for the proper switch is 503317000.

I have a 96 isuzu rodeo,3.2 and the brakes will lock up on their own, gradually then it takes about 15 minutes for them to release, any thoughts?

this could be caused by a few things, first you need to jack the truck up you will need all 4 wheels off the ground, put the transmission in neutral and have some one get in the truck and wile turning each wheel have the person in the truck push the brake pedal the wheel should stop instantly then have the person release the brake the brake should release instantly,( do this to each wheel ) if all brakes remain locked ( wont release instantly ) then replace the master cylinder if the both rear brakes wont release instantly replace the brake hose from the frame to the rear differential, if the both front brakes wont release replace master cylinder, if only one front brake wont release open the bleeder on that brake caliper if the wheel releases replace the caliper hose if the brake still wont release with the bleeder open replace the caliper, you should replace the caliper and brake hoses as a pair.

BRAKE DOES NOT STOP BLADE WHEN TRIGGER IS

the guard not releasing could be dirt around the spindle hub or the guard is bent, I would unplug tool and manually pull the guard down to see which one, if it is just sticking you can use a dry lube to cure that, the break could be dirty commutator or worn out brushes, switch. Give me the model number and I will try and find a breakdown for you and go further.
