I have a brother mfc 420cn but it keeps displaying "unable to initialize" when i tried to know the error code, it displays "machine error AF" please help me out
Open the small cover that hides the scanner flat cable. It has to be reconnected to the main pcb.
You have to open the printer scanner cover as you would do to change the carts. Unlock the blue support and lean the scanner towards a support ("L") open the small cover which will be found in the middle and goes to the left side. Beneath that is a white flat cable which simply has to be fixed into the main circuitboard (= pcb = printer circuit board).

I am also having the same problem. I inspected the flat cable and although it didn't look loose or have a poor connection to the PCB, I reset the connection anyway. It still displays "Unable to Init." Unable to scan/print/copy.
Did anyone find a solution to this problem? I have installed new cartridges, checked the connection on the white flat cable, turned off an on, unplugged and plugged back in. That is all I can think of. This is so aggravating. Thanks in advance.
Brother 420cn unable to intialiaze
I had the message "unable to clean" and had to go into Maintenance Mode to reset the purge counter--maybe some such for y'all --http://fix-your-printer.blogspot.com/201... . It fixed my 420cn, even tho' that says 425cn.
