So i bought the hdmi cable plugged it in and went to the display settings then video output settings and choose HDMI. it then says...
"Press the "X" button. The screen will be displayed based on this setting. If the setting is not correct, the screen will go blank temporarily. Then, after 30 seconds the system wil go back to the previous screen."
So after reading this i push x and the screen immediatly goes blank for about 30-40 seconds and returns to the previous screen. along the bottom scroll the words -
"Turn on the connected device. If a blank screen is displayed for more then 30 seconds. turn the PS3 system off and then on again."
So i do this and try again, same result....
I've tried unplugging the hdmi cable while the tv and ps3 are off then turning them on and plugging it in - same irritating result.
I've also tried unplugging everything except the power cables and the hdmi.....same result. Anyone have any other suggestions?

when you plug in the console hold down the on button for a while until you hear it beep. this will reset the av settings and work on any tv.
SOURCE: Problem connecting HDMI cable
Hey there I don't see why your playstation 3 should be doing that other than the console being defective. Sony doesn't have this problem that often and actually this is the first time i have heard of such problem. Try making sure the the HDMI cable is connected at both ends all the way in and also make sure your Samsung is a 1080P which i am pretty sure it is and finally if you have a friend or another 1080P HDTV in your house i would try and see if your ps3 will support the 1080P feature. If you still have the problem even when you use a different TV then its the ps3 that is malfunctioning otherwise it would be your Samsung. Let me know how that turns out alright.
Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.

The PS3 has a Blu-ray drive that can be
used not only for playing games but also for watching high-definition
movies. The best way to connect a PS3 to a high-definition viewing
device such as a video projector is through the PS3's high-definition
multimedia interface (HDMI) output. The HDMI connection can transmit up
to 1080p high-definition from the PS3 to the video projector using a
single cable. Attaching and setting up the HDMI cable will only take a
few minutes and will let you watch high-definition video from the PS3 on
the video projector.
