Depends on the router you have, if it is a Linksys or Cisco you can try to log into by opening your browser and going to this address, it is your router,
http://192.168.1.1 this is the default router address for all Linksys and Cisco routers. Once you log into your router, then pick Connectivity from the menu and the SSID is listed on then BASIC Tab. If you have another brand just google SSID and the brand and it will tell you what address to use to use. BTW -- If your router has a password then you'll need to know that also to get into the router to see the SSID.
Another option is you are not in a place with a lot of them is just use any wireless device and have it look for networks in your range, the name of the various networks that pop up in that list is the SSID of the routers.
Once you get into your router you can change the SSID to something you'll remember.
