Buttonhole not sewing

My needle stays in one place after sewing a couple of stitches and then knots up. I've rethread it, changed the stitch length, changed the tension. Not sure what I'm doing wrong

Sounds like something's keeping the foot from moving freely. See: http://picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/24536843 -- the aborted buttonhole to the left of the second photo was caused by the foot hitting the slightly raised lid of the accessory box. Ooops. Fix was to take off the accessory box.

SOURCE: Buttonholes

First be sure to follow the steps described in the manual for attaching the buttonholer.

Second, check that the buttonhole lever is pushed because it returns to it's unpushed state after a buttonhole is completed and therefore it will stitch in the same spot.

Also, try adjusting the stitch length. I've found that I can't make buttonholes while on the satin stich setting ( that little rectangle) but if I move it just a bit towards 1 it will manage to make the right stitches.

SOURCE: When i start to sew

There has to be a problem in your threading or your needle. You may have the needle inserted backwards, flat side has to face rear or the needle is bent. Totally unthread your machine and make sure that there are no tangles and that it feeding the right way. Watch how they show your for threading and winding the bobbin, plus threading the bobbin. Good luck, but I truly think it is in your threading.

SOURCE: This machine will sew properly & then start

you might check your bobbin case tension---turn the screw to the left to tighten----to the right to loosen
also after every project check the needle to make sure it's in good condition

SOURCE: I am sewing on 100%polyester silk and using a 65

I would suggest that you don't use reverse to lock stitches at the beginning and end of the seam and try to ease out the puckering on the seam after stitching it.

Then press each seam on both sides with a dry iron, silk setting then press it open, you should be able to ease the stitching a little.

Use a size 70 sharp needle and wind your bobbin very carefully, please read my tip on bobbin winding, if you wind it with jerks, you'll get uneven tensioned thread, this then relaxes when stitched out and will cause puckering. http://www.fixya.com/support/r10598580-winding_bobbin_correctly
Use Gutterman polyester thread or something similar quality.
Use a metal presser foot with maximum coverage onto the fabric and feed dogs. Stitch length 2. Take top tension down to 4.

You may also need to stitch with a strip of stitch and tear stabiliser if the fabric is very fine and silky, put it on the underside, stitch, then tear it away.

Lastly, if its a while since your machine was serviced, then it may be time, the top tension device may need a clean and calibration.

Janome Mystyle 22 skips stitches on the buttonhole function

If your Janome Mystyle 22 sewing machine is skipping stitches specifically when using the buttonhole function, there could be a few possible causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Needle: You mentioned that you have already changed the needle, but it's worth double-checking that you are using the correct needle type and size for the fabric you are working with. Ensure that the needle is inserted correctly and tightened securely.
2. Thread tension: Improper thread tension can cause skipped stitches. Make sure the upper thread and bobbin thread are properly threaded and that the tension settings are adjusted correctly for the fabric you are using. You may need to experiment with different tension settings to achieve the best results.
3. Buttonhole foot: Check that the buttonhole foot is attached securely and positioned correctly. Ensure that it is clean and free from any lint or debris that may be affecting its performance.
4. Feed dogs: The feed dogs underneath the fabric may not be gripping the fabric properly, especially when working with lighter fabrics. Ensure that the feed dogs are clean and free from any obstructions. You can try using a fabric stabilizer or placing tissue paper under the fabric to provide more traction for the feed dogs.
5. Lubrication: While you mentioned that the machine was recently serviced, it's possible that the buttonhole mechanism could benefit from some additional lubrication. Consult the user manual or contact Janome's customer support to inquire about lubrication points and recommended lubricants for your specific model.
6. Stitch length and speed: Adjusting the stitch length and sewing speed can sometimes help improve buttonhole stitching. Experiment with different stitch length settings to see if it makes a difference in stitch quality.
If you have tried all these steps and the issue persists, it may be best to consult a professional technician or reach out to Janome's customer support for further assistance. They will be able to provide specific guidance and recommendations based on your sewing machine model.

Could not sew buttonhole . The tread gathered in one spot and wouldn't move further

Hard to assist without a make/model.

If it has a built-in buttonhole function, you may need to take it for service.

If it is a function you have to do manually, then you probably need to set the stitch length a little longer. A shorter stitch length will cause the needle to stitch on top of the previous stitch causing a big knot of thread.

When using the button hole attachment, my fabric is not moved forward by the lower plate and thread gets caught up under that bottom plate. How do I fix this

Perhaps you have the stitch length set too short (close together) so the thread under the fabric is building up into a knot and then hangs up in the space under the needle plate. Try lengthening the stitch length and do some tests until you get it where you want the buttonhole to look.

Easiest way to make a buttonhole...manual does not tell much info

Easiest way is to create a bar tack at one end of the buttonhole (widest stitch width and stitch length set to 0). Stitch maybe 4 or 5 stitches.
Then move needle all the way to the left, set stitch length to very short (maybe somewhere between 0 & 1), width to slightly less than half, stitch forward to the end of the buttonhole.
Then make another bar tack (as above). Move needle all the way to the right, set to less than half width, short stitch length, and stitch in REVERSE to first bar tack. To tie off, set width to 0 and length to 0 and stitch 2-3 times in place. Raise presser foot, pull gently on fabric and clip threads.

Directions for making a buttonhole with an Elna SU

A transcript from the Elna SU manual reads as follows, and the manual can be viewed on line at http://sewingonline.co.uk/instructions/elnasp/

First make a few trial runs with a scrap of material exactly as the buttonhole will be stitched, with the machine adjusted as you intend to use it.
1. Use the embroidery and buttonhole foot. It can be chnged without a screwdriver by using the fixation screw.- With the stitch width knob at "0", turn the selector to zigzag "1".
2. De-center the needle to the left.
3. Set the stitch width knob at 2, with the solid mark on top.
4. Set the stitch length dial between 1/2 and 1/4.
5. a) Mark the desired length on the material.
b) Sew the first side of the buttonhole. Stop with the needle in the material and the mark (right).
c) Raise the foot and pivot the material round the needle. Lower the foot and raise the needle.
6. a) Set the stitch width knob at 4.
b) Sew a few stitches. Raise the needle.
7. a) Set the stitch width knob at 2.
b) Sew the second side and stop just short of the length of the first. Raise the needle.
8. a) Set the stitch width knob at 4.
b) Finish off the buttonhole by sewing a few stitches. Raise the needle.
9. a) Set the stitch width knob at "0".
b) Sew a few stitches to fasten the threads, holding the material back by hand.
10. Open with the buttonhole knife, which you will find in the accessory box.

Sews 1/4" and then sews in place

1) remove upper and bottom threads. Try sew without threads.
Is fabric transported corectly?

NO:
- Drop feed dog button is OFF
- Dust under stitch plate
- Transporter malfunction (must be taken for a service to the BERNINA dealer)

YES:
- Upper or bottom thread jammed
- The upper thread tension is too tight.
- Wrong needle used (probably small ...)

Elna SU buttonhole- I can't remember the order to set the dials for the automatic button hole function. Anyone know? Thanks

sure, put on the buttonhole foot after putting a button into it and using the screw knob to set the length you want.
Turn stitch length knob and stitch width knobs to zero, (always set them to zero first to avoid wear on the stitch selection mechanisim) then turn the left stitch selector knob to the blue button hole symbol. Now turn middle knob stitch width, to the blue buttonhole symbol. Now turn right knob stitch length to blue 1, sew down the first side of your buttonhole until foot slide in the buttonhole foot reaches end stop. raise needle and turn stitch length to blue 2, and sew three bar tacks across buttonhole. Again, raise needle and then turn stitch length to blue 3 and sew back down otherside of buttonhole until you reach the end stop. Needle up, turn length know to blue 4 and sew three bartacks to end. there is a last blue symbol dot on stitch length knob, this will sew a stitch in place to tie off the ends. Raise pressure foot, remove your work and draw top threads to underside with a needle, and tie off or use a dot of fray stop. Done! if you don't have a manual you could email me and I'll send you a copy of mine, tallygirl98 at yahoo dot com.

I have a old Elna machine. The air electronic SU 390 B. I have lost the manual and am trying to do buttonholes on a dress. I have forgotten the sequence of nob adjustments to complete the process.

Is this the duplex model with the base that fits into a sewing cabinet?

My Elna booklet lists a SP "air electronic" duplex (CL.39), if so, then it would be same stitches as the 38, yellow front panel, 7 built in stitches and automatic knob with blue markings for buttonholing.

Here is the SU manual images for buttonholing, should be exactly the same for the SP.

tally_girl_4.jpg Instructions are:
use buttonhole foot. turn the 3 dials to buttonhole marked in blue (stitch selection, width and length).
Mark length of buttonhol on the material. Place work under foot with the mark in the middile fo the foot, the start being directly below the needle. sew the first side, raise the needle. Turn stitch width dial to 2, blue. Sew a few stitches for bartack. Raise the needle.
Turn stitch width dial to 3 blue. sew the second side. stop just short of the first side. Raise the needle.
turn the stitch width dial to 4 blue. sew a few stitches for bartack. Raise the needle.
Turn stitch width dial to "fastening off stitch" blue dot. Sew a few stitches, holding back the material by hand. Raise needle, lift pressure foot and remove work, triming off threads.
Open the buttonhole with your seam ripper (put a pin across the end to avoid any nasties).

Changing stitches on a White 1418 sewing machine...

I have a White 1418. Here's how you do it:

1. Attach the buttonhole presser foot (should have come with your machine) and place the fabric underneath.
2. Set the stitch length knob to 0, the zigzag width knob to 5, and set the needle position to center. Sew 3-5 stitches.
3.Change the stitch length to 0.5, the zigzag width to 2, and the needle position to left. Sew to the entire length of your buttonhole.
4.Set stitch length knob to 0, zigzag width knob to 5, and needle position to center and sew about 3-5 stitches
5. Set the stitch length knob to 0.5, zigzag width to 2, and set needle position to the right. Pressing the R button (reverse button), sew up to the top stitches.
6. Remove the fabric and open the button hole with a button hole cutter.

Sounds complicated, but it's really easy. I love this machine, you just have to know how to use it!
