It sounds like your compressor is short cycling and yes that is probably a prelude to major problems. A number of things can cause this. Check to make sure your condenser is clean (it's the heat exchanger in the back) and if there is a fan for that unit make sure that is turning when the "motor" you are hearing comes on. If that heat exchanger is covered in dust you can easily solve your problem. If the fan has died, you might have the knowledge to do it. If those look ok it's probably something with the refrigeration cycle and you'll probably need an expert to figure it out in person.

I removed the rear panel. Very little dust and dirt, I vac'd what was there. Fan works well, was clean and running sommth. Large black rounded piece (compressor?) was very hot to the touch. I'm guessing this is the problem. Unit is/was very clean, fan works well. Need suggestions.
