My 1987 FXST has a brand new battery and starter motor reconditioned - including replacement of Bendix. However, upon start up the starter doesn't engage until the 4 - 7th attempt. Would appreciate your advice to help solve problem.

SOURCE: 84 FXST Starter Kicks out before engine fires

I'd be willing to bet that it's not "kicking out". The tale tell sign is that the starter keeps running. As long as the plunger in the solenoid is pulled inward, which moves the starter drive into engagement with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum, the start will run. If the starter drive were being "kicked out" the solenoid wouldn't still be engaged and the starter would not continue running.

I would come closer to thinking that your starter drive is bad, the bendix. These things are notorious for going bad, especially the cheap Chinese made aftermarket ones. I've replaced them with only a few weeks use on them. If you buy a new drive, get an Accel, made in the U.S.A.. Simply pull the starter drive out and clamp the shaft in a vice with aluminum jaws on it. The little nut on the end has left handed threads. When you put the nut back on, put some Red Loctite #271 on it. This ought to solve your problem. If you have anymore questions, drop me a line directly at [email protected] Good Luck!

04 seadoo rxp starter sounds like its spinning free its brand new starter good battery

Maybe a new starter but the bendix drive gear is not kicking into the flywheel teeth. Take the starter off and connect to a battery momentarily to see the bendix drive gear is jumping out. If not, replace the bendix on it or take it back and tell them it's a faulty starter.

Car starts but the engine will not turn over

Not likely. More likely is that the starter, or the starter solenoid is bad.
This is the way it works. Turn key, car checks to see if all safety items are OK (in neutral or park, brake pedal depressed, etc), if OK then sends signal to starter solenoid to engage(it's basically just a magnetic switch), which allows the full power of the battery to turn the starter and engage the bendix, which engages the flywheel and turns the motor. If any of those things are bad, the car don't start. If it's the starter, the bendix will make a metallic click or thunk. If it's the bendix, the starter turns, but not he motor. If it's a fault in the electrical system, then no starter, and no bendix. If the battery is weak, the bendix may or may not click.
To repair;
1; starter can be rebuilt, including the bendix. moderately expensive if done by shop. Inexpensive if you can do it yourself. Warning - it's a PITA to get it out!
2; selenoid can be replaced. Usually inexpensive, except for shop charges. It sets on top of the starter.
3; If electrical; this can get expensive as it is labor intensive to track down the fault, even if the part is usually inexpensive.

When i start the 95 tahoe, i hear a spinning noise. starter is not engaging the engine. it's a brand new starter.

Hello there:
The spinning that you are hearing is the bendix spinning there is a
engagement spring that forces the bendix to engage on the flywheel
If this spring is weak or broke the bendix cant engage furthermore if the teeth on the bendix are broke or chipped or the teeth on the fly wheel are chipped or broke -this will not allow the bendix to engage or start to turn the motor ok so i would have these things checked out ok?
I hope that this is very helpful for you best regards

try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.
