Wiring installation for ss5l5 IR 5hp 60 gallon compressor

I need to know the amperage so that I can determine wire size for installation. This information is nowhere on the unit or in the manual??? I am wanting to wire an ingersoll rand air compressor, SS5L5, Emerson Motor. It is 18 to 20 feet from the breaker panel. 230v/1/60 What size wire do I need to run and what size breaker? Does code require a disconnect by the compressor? I have some open 30 amp breakers that used to be connected to a water heater. If I use the 2 x 30's from the water heater should I use a smaller disconnect (I had seen on some other thread that 60 amp is too much for the 5 hp motor). Thank you

A #10AWG wire can be use and 40Amp breaker can be use also. Your 5hp/230V/1/60hz motor amp is 30A.

The Electric motor does not have enough torque to start compressor. It is hooked up to 230V with 40 amp single phase. checked voltage with meter so I know it has enough voltage.

Does it trip the breaker or does the motor just hum and not turn the compressor? The motor may need a start capacitor. Do not keep tryin to start you can burn out the start winding on the motor.
TURN OFF POWER AND LOCK OUT.... try and take the belts off (if it has belts)of the motor and compressor and make sure both turn freely. IF THEY TURN FREELY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR. You said voltage, wire size and breakers are the right size.
Hope this helps you with your problem...Jim...please leave a comment

Standing in front of the SS5L5 pump pulley, looking at it,should it turn CW or CCW?

Easy to tell what direction pump turns. Look at pump pulley and notice and fan shape of the spokes. The pulley blows air across the pump. Most pumps turn ccw, however verify by looking at fan. Good luck

I need aparts break down list for the pump on this compressor to find the part number of the fly wheel. Mine is bent

The part # is 97335756 (Belt wheel). Typically its hard to bend a belt wheel. They usually break not bend. I would check the crankshaft and front bearing before purchasing the belt wheel.

What could cause a piston to break inside the compressor

Bearing failure allowing piston to hit valves or a broken valve dropped into the motor but need to know if it's a piston type or a reciprocating compressor because they would have different problems.

I have an IR SS5L5. We have developed a leak at discharge tube

SOunds like your compression fittings have failed on the copper line. I recommend changing over to a stainless steel braided flexable line. Try www.mastertoolrepair.com they have the stainless hoses.

Need to know type of oil it takes

I recommend type 30 all season full synthetic. It can be purchased on line, at an IR distributor and most Graingers.
