Maytag icemaker drips dirty water onto existing ice ini tray.

Recently the ice maker in our Maytag freezer (model AFD2535FES - freezer is the bottom drawer) has started to drip dirty water onto the existing ice in the tray. It will form a stalagmite of ice on one cube in the tray with the top of the stalagmite tainted a dark, dirty brown. I just now looked into the freezer and the cube in that position (left front of the tray) is stained with a rust color (no stalagmite.) Needless to say this makes us wary of the entire contents of the ice tray. Thoughts?

SOURCE: ice buildup in freezer drip pan and water overflow

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

SOURCE: maytag fridge water dripping from inside freezer side

This sounds like the evaporator drain may be clogged either in the freexer compartment or at the outlet to the drain pan under the unit. Every defrost cycle the defrost element makes water by melting the ice on the evaporator coils. If the drain is clogged there is no other place for the ice to go. Many times the drain may just have ice buildup in the evaporator drain funnel that can be corrected with a manual defrosting.

To do this manual defrosting all you do is first unplug the unit then remove everything from the freezer compartment. After that place a fan blowing into the freezer section for a little over 2 hours. Please NOTE this will make more of that pesky water mess so be ready to tend to the mess as it presents itself.

After the 2 hour fan session plug the unit back in and reload the freezer compartment with previous content. Monitor for the possibility of the water manifeting itself again.

In addidtion to the above there is a drain pan catch basin in the bottom of the unit near the compressor. They are usually white plastic on Maytag units and not to rugged. Make sure that the drain pan is not loaded with debris. There is about a 1/2 inch diameter opaque plastic line that drains into the catch basin. That is the Evaporator darin tube. Ensure the very end of the tube does not have caked up debris in the very end of the tube. Sometimes this tube cakes up and then the debris dries hard inside the tube near the end. Make sure the tube is free of foreign objects and clean.

After all of the above / cleaning and clearing / manual defrosting it is still making water then most likely the lower panel under the defrosting element / evaporator may have become disconnected allowing defrost cycle water from the melted ice into the freezer compartment vs exit via the drain. To fix the disconnected power metal panel problem the rear freezer panel would have to removed to re-attach / repair the metal panel that guides the water into the evaporator drain.

SOURCE: My Maytag MDF2561FES, Bottom freezer

I believe this is a classic symptom of what they call wicking. Water deposits build up in ice-maker tray and eventually that causes you situation. The best solution is to replace the icemaker unit but you can buy at the local appliance parts store an icemaker cleaner and remove it and carefully clean it out then reinstall and you should be good to go for a while. there should be one screw along the bottom of icemaker remove that then loosen sometimes remove 2 screws on top of icemaker. carefully unplug wires. Follow instruction on cleaner bottle for cleaning.

Ice accumulation on the bottom of the freezer

Your drain line is clogged, that is located behind the white wall inside of the freezer. The water comes from defrost cycle, that happens every 8-12 hours. You need to defrost it and snake it.

Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

Maytag ice maker will not release cubes

Sounds like it has a " seeping " water valve . Only thing to do is replace the water inlet valve . There is a certain amount of water to go into icemaker at fill . A seeping valve will let water continually drip into icemaker , making large cubes which icemaker cannot dump . A larger amount of seeping , will overfill the icemaker , and drip into the freezer and floor .

Water leaking from freezer compartment and ice maker not working properly

I figured it out. When the water filter gets old and plugged up, not enough water flows into the cube trays. You can fix the ice problem by replacing or just removing the filter. (The filter really isn't necessary unless your water comes from a well or some other undesirable source.) The filters cost about $40 from Sears, but you can find them on ebay for under $30 including shipping.

11 year old amana bottom freezer icemaker drips water when filling tray

Hello dunc444444
Welcome,
You said, Bottom freezer works fine, but upper refrigerator has no cold air

Is your freezer so full that it is packed to the top especially in the rear?
Refrigerators and freezers share the air from the compressor and travel through vents in the rear of the freezer and fridge.
Sometimes it can effect the cooling in the fridge if the freezer articles block the vents!

The water overfilling in the ice maker is an ice maker problem only.
When we install an ice maker there is a short white plastic tube that we push through the rear
hole of the fridge which supply's the water to the maker, the outside water line attaches to this.
That tube we push through the fridge must go in till it stops. And empties in to a little sistran at the rear of the ice maker. Make sure it did not sip out or backwards a little when you may have moved
rolled the fridge out to clean under it!

Also you need periodically to remove the front grill down in front of the fridge and gently run a refrigerator brush under the coils to clean out the dust that may block air flow over the coils.(the coils are metal black tubes that run back and forth along the bottom of your fridge.
The vacuum will not reach in to that tight space. That's why they make a special brush for this chore.
Let me know how you do?

Water leaking from freezer compartment and ice maker not working properly

  • the water(in the bottom of the freezer) is coming from the freezer when is defrosts. the drain line is in the back wall of the freezer and may be clogged up with ice. clean out the freezer and pour some hot water in the very back of the freezer, this will hopefully unclog the drain. if not, then you have to take the back wall out of the freezer to get directly to the drain line. there should just be a couple screws holding it; it is just an aluminum or plastic panel.
  • and
  • the icemaker problem
  • it could be that the water valve is slowly leaking water into up to the icemaker and freezing before dripping out of the tube. then when the icemaker turns on the water to the icemaker it is partially blocked by the ice and sprays water all over instead of gently falling into the icemaker.
  • if this is the case then changing the water valve on the back of the machine and defrosting the fill tube behind the icemaker should fix this problem.

Ice maker problems

the heater on the ice maker has gone bad the easiest way to fix is to replace ice maker.the heater is on the bottom of the maker and heats tray up to harvest ice if it dont the ice will stick. But try taking maker out and cleaning it real good with a light spongee (Scrubee)
let it dry then spray some a light coat of pam (or similar) into ice bins and try that ahrd water will eat the coating off the bins

Ice Maker Freezing Up and Ice not dispensing

Check your ice cube tray to see if it is warped. Mine was. I took the tray off and dipped it into boiling water and remoulded it to the original shape and re-installed it. So far no problems. The tray gets warped because of the ice cube release mechanism. The tray is rotated around until it meets a block on one corner which creates the twisting motion we used to do on manual trays. Over time it tends to warp the tray. Good luck
