My ge spectra xl144 oven works except when i try to use the bake option it stays @ 100 degrees and wont heat up. Burners, broil & self clean all work. Any ideas?
My 4 1/2 year old GE oven doesn't heat at all when on bake. The digital readout stays at "PRE" for preheat. I don't hear the gas come on and I see nothing glowing. The burners work and the coil works when set to broil although no flame comes on.My 4 1/2 year old GE oven doesn't heat at all when on bake. The digital readout stays at "PRE" for preheat. Most likely the oven ignitor is bad or weak. You can look at it and see how it compares to the broil ignitor. If you see a whitish color on the ignitor and if it doesn't fully glow then it needs to be replaced.

The JBP78 is electric, since you are talking about a gas oven I think the model is incorrect.
Talking about a gas ovens:
If the oven is not heating up and both broiling and baking burners are working and coming up then check the temperature probe sensor and the control board.
If one of the two burners is not firing check the ignitor, the burner and coil, the burner and flame sensor. The most common problems come from defective ignitor.
pull out the racks and remove the bottom floor of the oven, turn it on bake,if the ignitor doesn't glow most likely it's bad,if it does glow and it doesn't ignite within 40 to 60 seconds the ignitor is bad.even though it glows doesn't mean it's good,it works by amps.it takes 3.2 amps.for a flat ignitor to open the gas valve and 2.5 amps for a round ignitor to open the gas valve.
Possibly the bake igniter, the temperature sensor or the electronic oven clock/control. Does broil mode heat properly or does it run cool also? If broil heats to the proper temperature then the temperature sensor is probably ok. That leaves the ignitor or the controller which takes some more troubleshooting. If it is the controller, we repair them at www.fixyourboard.com.
1. Do both coils get red hot? Try with bake @ 400F, then with broil to be sure. I recently had a bad lower bake coil, but the oven got hot slowly since the broil top coil comes on periodically to even up the heat in the oven. Replacing the lower coil was easy, about a 15-min job, but I had to pre-tap the screw holes on the coil terminals since my oven had extremely short wires.
2. If the coils are ok, the problem may be with the thermocouple or control board.
Broil works, bake option does not.
