First, if you are still running Vista on your desktop then you will need to buy a license for the laptop. Does the laptop have a WinXP on it now? If so, go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor. If not, determine the hardware specifications of your laptop and go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/system-requirements.aspx Compare your laptops specs to those listed for the version of Vista you wish to install.

Sorry dagcg2, I missed that the hard drive was wiped. When you power up the laptop watch the screen carefully, it should tell you how to get into the BIOS, usually F2 on Dells. You may not need to change anything. If the CD-ROM is already in the boot list then the machine will search there if it can't find a boot device that is above it in the boot list. Doesn't hurt to put the disk (either one) in and give it a shot.

No, you can not use vista here. Xp should be slow but ok.

    1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    1 GB of system memory
40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
    WDDM Driver
128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
    Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
    32 bits per pixel
    DVD-ROM drive
    Audio Output
    Internet access (fees may apply)

These are must for the pc, that can run vista. That is a P3 processor with 8 times less memory then it need. How cas someone say, it will run ? do u think, it will run ?

Please reconsider the rating you game me and the people who really looked the pc model and tried to solve your problem.

if you do not want to buy an OS, try linux. its fine and free.

And there are ways to use windows without buying..i must not mention it here lol.

IF YOU INSTALL WINDOWS VISTA THERE WOULD BE NO DRIVERS AVAILABLE TO INSTALL ON YOUR COMPUTER....

HOWEVER IF YOU SOMEHOW INSTALL WINDOWS VISTA IT WILL AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE VERY BADLY AND WILL PICK UP ONLY THE GENERIC DRIVERS RESULTING IN POOR QUALITY OUTPUT AND PERFORMANCE.....
EVEN IF YOU CHECK IT ON MICROSOFT'S WEBSITE ABOUT BASIC WINDOWS VISTA HARDWARE NEEDS AND USER'S REVIEWS THERE WOULD BE DIFFERENCE OF AGES SO DON''T GO ABOUT INSTALLING WINDOWS VISTA...

If you wiped it off the hard drive, then you will need to use the boot cd because your computer will not be able to boot from a blank hard drive. You'll need to go into BIOS, and change your boot order so it will boot from the cd. then just let it run..good luck..

You would use a boot CD. But do you have a valid key? Try getting a copy of the Windows 7 RC You will get 1 years use out of it and it will perform better than Vista

You use neither you would put in the windows vista setup disk and make sure your bios is set to boot from cd. Put in the windows setup disk turn on the pc and when it says "press any key to boot from cd" hit a key and it will take you into the windows setup. And technically any computer should be able to boot windows vista as long as it meets the min hardware spec posted on microsoft.com

Factory settings restore on dell inspiron 1525 windows vista

Resetting a Dell Inspiron to the factory settings allows the user to restore the Dell Inspiron to the original operating condition as if it was just taken out of the box. Dell system includes a restore utility called 'Dell Symantec System Restore' to reset or restore your Dell system to factory setting.

I Have a dell inspiron 1720 and im geting NTLDR FILE IS MISSING error. when i use the install disk that came with it and select repair start up it runs saying it looking for errors but it never stops. its...

This basically means the hard disk is having problems (although could happen on an OS crash with out damaging the disk). First thing I would try is a diagnostic to check the disk. Download something like Ultimate Boot Disk. This utility disk (bootable CD) has lots of diagnostic tools including testing the disk.
NTLDR file is a Windows NT file that is used to boot the operating system. It is created during the installation and is custom for each system.

If the disk contain the Vista install, you can reinstall the OS. You will first be asked if you want to repair the OS, select no. It will then say it found a copy of Vista installed and ask if you want to repair it, say yes. This will do a repair with out deleting your data or programs. You will need to do all the Window updates before trying to run any programs as they will probably be expecting new files that the ones on the disk that came with the computer.

NOTE: If you are not confident do either of these procedures, ask someone who has more skill. When doing the diagnostics or the reinstall, if you do it incorrectly it will wipe your disk.

Dell Inspiron's also come with a built in recovery tool. I do not remember the Function key to hit to enter the recovery tool but it should show on the screen when you first turn it on. I have had quite a bit of luck with the Dell recovery fixing non-booting systems without erasing the disk or user data. Try using the online tech support from Dell.

Laptop hard disk using vista

First of all, you need the password. If the password was set in the BIOS, you'll have to take it to a Tech for disassembly so they can reset the password from the motherboard jumper set. If it's a Windows password for windows logon, Boot from the Windows CD and run FDISK to format and wipe the Hard drive for a New Windows Installation. You'll need to "Partition" the Hard Disk for Multiple Operating Systems.

If Vista is running, Login and goto Control Panel. Select Help and enter "Multiple Operating Systems" in the Search box. The information you need is there for Vista.
