There are two ways to upgrade the iOS version of your iPhone with connecting the device to iTunes on a computer
- or directly from within the iPhone, but only snce iOS 5, it is possible to upgrade the iOS version without the need to connect the iOS device to a computer (over-the-air update)
just go to: settings - general - software update

Not possible on 5.1 for 4s apple stopped writing the code for 5.0.1 already so a downgrade ain't happening bright side though any day now according to Twitter

Download the latest ios on the net and also download snowbreeze.Input the ios in snowbreeze.You will then get a new custom firmware created by snowbreeze.You need to put your iphone 3G into Pawned DFU mode using iRecovery or Redsnow.In iTunes,on the "Restore" button, press SHIFT+click on mouse cursor and locate the custom firmware.Then you are good to go.If you get any iTunes errors,look on the net for its solution or you can ask me,

it is not possible to update an iPhone 3 to iOS 6!
it supports only iOS 4.2 - not newer
For the iPad first generation (A1219) to update is only possible with connecting the device to iTunes on a computer.
- this model supports only iOS 4.2
- NO iOS 5/ 6/7/8
