Just bought disks to copy all of my VHS tapes. When trying to initialize a DVD-RW 4.7GB 1-4x speed disc, after the initialisation sequence, displays message - Could not format the disc because of error detection. Did not even display the options for -V or -VR mode. Have tried several dics without succes so far. HELP.
I don't have a solution but share the same problem. However, I also have the problem with used discs. These were initialised and used to record programmes. They can still be used to play the recorded programmes - although sometimes several attempts are now needed for them to load. When the problem first arose after I bought some more discs, Verbatim discs were also recommended to me. I purchased some of these and could initialise most and have used some to make recordings. However, I am now unable to reuse any DVD-RW discs. If I try to delete recorded programmes I get an error. On reloading the disc the programmes are still there and can be played. But if I try to clear the disc by reformatting I mostly get an error and the disc becomes unusable. If I can reformat it without an error I get a system error if I try to make a recording. This is for discs that have been used without problems for at most a handful of recordings - or even the freshly initialised discs.
Recordings on DVD-R discs are fine (and can if required be finalised). RAM disc recordings are fine and can be played back in time-slip mode if required. It is only with DVD-RW disc that there are problems and this with older but little used discs as well as new (Verbatim) discs.
I therefore do not think it IS the discs which are causing the problem but a fault with the recorder. Since others are having the same experience it looks like an inherent problem of the machine which is occurring after a few years of use.
Perhaps there is someone with experience of repairing DVD recorders - or who have had this model repaired - who can throw some light on this. To purchase a new digital recorder would, for me, mean also purchasing a new digital TV because a digital only recorder would not be compatible with my set up so if the RB250-SB could be made to work a bit longer it would give me time to save up for a new system

Thanks for response. No luck though I am afraid. Have now tried Philips - maxell - TDK - Budget - Memorex, all DVD-RW. all with no luck. Toshiba said they recomend Verbatim, havn't tried that yet. I think the problem may be that the machine is three years old and disc manufaturing has changed in that time!!!!
Last try resulted in the disc being un readable and unwritable.
Any idea if I could format the discs to DVD-RW - VR on the computer as they are recognised there ?
