Try pressing HOME,
Then go to SETTINGS
From the list, select SCREEN
There are now several options that may be causing the picture to zoom.
Try adjusting each setting in the following order, checking if the problem has solved after each change.
Set:
DISPLAY AREA to NORMAL
WIDE MODE to NORMAL
AUTO WIDE to OFF
4:3 DEFAULT to NORMAL
If you are still having problems, you may need to speak to Sony about having the TV serviced as an internal circuit may be broken - if this is the case it may be covered by the warranty.

It is most likely that you are trying run a high resolution to a large 42 inch TV and the graphics card may not be able to handle that. Try reducing the resolution on that tv signal from your desktop settings.
I think what you're talking about is the feature of the TV that auto-adjusts the screen for different pictures. What is does is tries to auto-fill the screen in case there are black bars on top (because of widescreen content) or on the side (regular tv content). It does it mistakenly if it notices too much black anywhere... happens a lot to me when credits are rolling. You can turn this off in your TV settings... I think you just set it to a specific type (widescreen, etc) instead of "auto".
I have an older Mitsibutishi 52" HD 1080. I recently upgraded my cable box to DirecTV HDTV. When I change to format to view in 1080 the TV goes from full screen to what seems to be wide screen with a black bar on the top and bottom. If I change the format to 480p I get a full screen; but the picture has a "redish tint" over it as if looking through sunglasses...I tried everything in my TV manual even call the cable company. Any suggestions?
This must be a duplicate, and since I'm not sure which one you'll be checking back with:
Go into the menu and select picture settings and then advanced picture settings. I'm not sure on that model that you can manually change the aspect ratio from zoom to 16:9 or 4:3 ect... But select Auto Format and the TV will pre-select the correct format for viewing.....
Any questions just let me know.
Bill
