Black screen problem with Canon PowerShot SD 750

First try pressing the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. If that doesn't help, astuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Look for DISP or DISPLAY button in the lower-right corner of the back of your camera. Press this once while the camera is turned on. The DISPLAY button manually turns the screen on and off. This is to save battery power for extended use. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place.

Is the screen cracked from the impact of being dropped? It may be worth it to have the LCD screen replaced or just checked in case the LCD ribbon came loose during impact. I would probably contact the guys in the link I posted above and have them check it out. This issue is most definitely fixable though!

It coud be a very common IRIS/Shutter stuck problem...this has been reported on lot of S3 IS & S2 IS cameras... just search for this on web and you'll find a temporary solution also (related to taking battery out in the middle of taking picture during a long exposure (15" in Tv mode), but for more permanent fix you need take it back to Canon service center

Think that you accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

The CCD is dead or the lens shutter doesn't open. You have to contact your local Canon service center.

YOUR PROBLEM MAY BE SIMPLE. IF YOU ARE USING THE ORIGINAL MEMORY CARD THAT CAN INSTALLED IN YOUR CAMERA THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THIS CARD IS JUST FULL AND HAS NO ROOM FOR ANY OTHER PICTURES. THE STANDARD CARD FOR THE SD-750 IS A 32MB-SD MEMORY CARD THAT WILL HOLD APRX. 20 PICTURES AT A NORMAL JPEG 3072 X 1728 MPIXEL RATING. YOU MIGHT TRY EITHER DOWNLOADING THE ONBOARD PICTURES TO CLEAR THE MEMORY, OR INSTALL A NEW HIGHER CAPACITY SD CARD. I WOULD RECOMMEND A 4 GIG CARD. THIS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROBLEM. Try your camera settings black and white or sepia take them off.Or just reset all your settings
