I have an acer aspire one 8.9 was running with Linux, I put in windows xp, that seem to work fine, now I get Error 17....would like step by step procedure...I am disable, and don't know much about computers, but I am willing to try, since I do not have much money to buy another...any kind soul, out there which i know there are some out there, please help me...thank you....
Error 17 is normally related to a particular device not having the correct driver. One way to fix this is to force the computer to reinstall and configure the driver by "removing" the device from windows and reinstalling it.
Here's how to do it:
First, you should figure out what device is causing trouble. The error message you get (after Error 17) may tell you some information such as whether it is your display, network adapter, or something else.
Right click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties. (My Computer may be on your start menu)
Click on the Hardware tab and click the "Device Manager" button.
The offending device may show with either a red 'x' through it or with an exclamation point in a yellow circle.
Right click on the problem device and select "uninstall"
The computer should now uninstall the device.
I would recommend rebooting next.
Upon booting, the computer may automatically find the new device. If not go to Start -> Control Panel (or Start -> Settings -> Control Panel)
Choose Add Hardware
Follow the wizard and let it automatically find the device and install the drivers for you.
Hope this helps - flub
Pretty much anything I can think of would require a jump drive or an external CD drive.
The easiest way would be to run through the repair console as described athttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/822800. Of course this requires booting from the Windows CD Rom. Even though the Aspire One doesn't have an internal CD Rom, you could plug in an external CD drive if you have one. You can have the aspire boot from the USB device by changing the boot order by hitting F12 when the machine starts.
Alternative 1
If you still have Linux on the machine and are "dual booting" you can boot into Linux and mount the windows drive (it will probably show as ACER when browsing around your file system. Then replace \windows\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys with the good file from the CD (\i386\ntfs.sys).
How to get the file onto the Acer, you could either use a USB jump drive or copy it from a network share.
Alternative 2 - Diclaimer - this should work "in theory"
If you don't still have Linux running on your netbook, If you have another windows machine with CD burning software (Roxio or Nero), you can attempt to copy the Windows CD and save it as an .iso file. I'm not sure if there might be copy protection that would keep you from being able to do this, but I suspect it would be possible.
Once you have the .iso file, you could use unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to put that .iso file onto a jump drive (would probably need to be over 700 MB). Boot from the jump drive as described above and operate as if you have the windows disk installed.
Alternative 3
Use unetbootin to create a bootable version of Knoppix on a jump drive. Knoppix is a version of Linux that will run entirely from Read-Only media, such as a CD and does not install on the hard drive. Boot from the jump drive and follow the directions above as if you have Linux still installed.
