What do you do to convert a T49F freezer to run as a refrigerator and is this feasible?

  • Dennis Boxerman May 11, 2010

Yes, you can reset the t'stat to a higher temp but there are a few possible problems. Standard restaurant temp for a refrigerator is 34 to 38 degrees. A freezer is usually zero degrees plus/minus 5 degrees. The evap runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than the box temp. The problem is that the freezer system is designed to run at a colder temp. Running it at a higher temp will cause the compressor to run at a higher amp load. (Compressor working harder). The pressures are higher thus a higher load on the compressor. It also has some sort of device for defrost cycles. This causes the system to cycle off for periods of time to clear the coil. It also has heaters that come on to clear the evap of any frost. It may or may not stay in defrost very long due to the higher temps. Lastly, the system will probably not have very long run times which can effect the humidity of the box.

So, in the nut shell, reset the temp and monitor what happens. It might or might not do the job. It could possibly lead to an early death for the compressor.

Choose wisely grasshopper and Good Luck.

Standard refrigerator temp is 40 degrees F. If the freezer has a thermostat which will allow it to run at 40 degrees, I'd say you could just set it there and use it for a fridge.

Is that what you are asking?

First of all the unit uses a low temperature compressor which is designed to work on a freezer. Refrigerators use a medium temperature compressor. So most likely it would be over sized for what you are trying to accomplish,
Secondly the evaporator feed device is designed for "low temperature", not "medium temperature", so it would involve resizing the feed device.

Fan is not running in my True T49F Freezer

There is a switch above the door; check you have power from it when closed, then check the evaporator is cold enough as there is a thermistor that stops the fan until it is beginning to freeze. Lastly check the fan blade isn't stuck and the motor is ok.

Probably the compressor has shorted.
99.999% of the time this is the main culprit.
Otherwise wiring short.

T49F true freezer thermostat does have a hot + ground or does it not make a dif. Likr other frezzers

as a general rule, in ALMOST every case, the thermostat just breaks one side of power. Usually one wire in and one out. I've not seen a double pole, single throw in a True, ever.

We have a true T49F freezer and the evaporator fans are not running. The compressor is running on startup. The coils are cold. But are freezing up. Shouldn't the fan be on, or does the cabinet have to...

Freezers have a sensor that is referred to as a "Fan Delay/Defrost Terminator". It senses the temp during the defrost cycle. Usually, when the evap temp reaches about 50 degrees, there should not be any frost or ice on it. This device terminates the defrost cycle. It also keeps the fans off so warm air is not circulated. When the evap gets to about 20 degress or so, the sensor switches on the evap fans. If the fans are not coming on, either the sensor is bad or the evap is not reaching the proper temp to cause the sensor to turn on the fans.

Hope is helps to clear up some things and point you in a direction as to what might be going on.

Convert freezer to refrigerator

Converting a freezer to run like a fridg can be done ,however it is sometimes tricky. you have to replace the thermostat, you will also want to shorten the defrost time setting. and may have to disable the fan delay to let the evaporator fans run all of the time, to prevent short cycling of the compressor.
