There's a tiny slide switch on the side of the card. Slide it to the other position and try again.

But one thing I've noticed is that you mention that the card is 4GB. As such, it's likely that this card is an SDHC card. There is also a possibility that your A540 camera is not recognizing the card as the SDHC format came out well after the A540 was designed.

If you're still having problems with your 4GB card, recommend trying again with a standard SD card (2GB or less). 2GB standard SD cards are very inexpensive, and can be found on Amazon for about $7 with free shipping.

And hang onto the 4GB card. It will come in handy again someday.

How to unlocked pny optima sd memory card 4gb

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

My A540 camera gives me a Memory card error when I put in a new card. I have tried different brands and checked the card lock switch. These cards work in another camera

Take a close look at the cards that you've used. Are they all 4GB or higher "SDHC" cards? If so, that's your problem. Your camera was made well before the SDHC format came out. Although the card looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format it uses is very different. Unfortunately, there is no way that your camera will work with SDHC format. It can only use standard SD (cards that are 2GB or less). Fortunately, these are very inexpensive these days (check Amazon).

When I now try to use a 4gig memory card it always says the card error or card locked. I have tried card in both positions but it still says it is locked. I have tried with 3 different 4gig cards. What...

You may be restricted to using only SD cards, and many 4gb cards are actually SBHD. My sister had this problem with her camera and by putting in a new 2 gb SD card, her camera worked fine. You may need to shop online in order to find an SD card, but they're widely available online. It costs about the same for 2 2gb cards as one 4gb even though they aren't as convenient.

My camera says it is write protected

Most SD memory cards have a small slide switch on the edge off the card. This switch is used to write protect the data on the SD card - you can lock or unlock the SD card be sliding this switch.

When i insert 4gb memory card into canon power shot s21s, camera is disabled. cannot take pictures

Your new 4GB memory card is the problem. The card would likely be an SDHC card (look on its front cover). Your A540 camera was designed well before the SDHC format came out, and your camera will not recognize it. Your camera can only use standard SD cards (2GB or less). Here's some from Amazon.

A540 says "memory card error" " card locked" but 4gb card is not locked - can access card on card reader - copy on and off. a540 works with 2gb sd card no problem. please help?

The A540 works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work in this camera. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

PNY optima SD HC 4GB card will not read

Try putting a tiny piece of scotch tape over the lock slider. See if that works.

Just put in new san disk 4gb memory card and receiving error message - memory card error. I unlocked memory on card itself (that little gray sliver that goes up and down) What gives

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.

You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.
