I've had seldom/occasional incidents of buzzing and sparking while cooking. I believe this may be because the metallic looking rectangular "plate" (wave cover?) on the right side wall of the oven interior has a burned area with a small hole. I re-positioned it, so that a solid area is now over the side wall hole, and that is now covered. I think the problem has stopped, but am I safe without replacing the wave cover? I think they may cost more than the micro cost me (yard sale - $10).

That is called the waveguide cover and it is there to stop moisture, steam and food particle from entering the magnetron or aerial and destroy the component parts.
There are spares available through Philips Agents or online from ebay or espares etc.
It is fairly innexpensive but essential!
