Laptop hinge broken

Problem can be;

A) Graphics chipset
B) Video Cable
C) screen Inverter
D) LCD screen

Let's diagnose, and find out.

A) Graphics chipset:

To start off with, the Pavilion dv5000 series of Notebook PC's; is NOT known to have a problem with the graphics chipset.
The Pavilion dv2000 series, Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series; does.

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port; on the laptop.
The VGA port is on the Left side of the laptop, and located towards the rear.

This is a general example of a VGA connector (port), and VGA Cable,

You can use a CRT type of monitor (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.
By factory default settings, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
IF not:

There are at least 3 display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

Press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the SAME time tap once on the F4 key.
The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

Still no? Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F4 key.

No display on external VGA monitor, suggests a problem with the graphics chipset.
(Most of the time it is a problem with the Mounting, of graphics chipset TO motherboard. If this proves to be your problem, state in a Comment )

Display on external VGA monitor means the problem is the Video Cable, or inside the Display Assembly.
(screen Inverter or LCD screen)

B) Video Cable:

The Video Cable plugs into the motherboard, in an area under the Switch Cover.

(Left side.
Switch Cover is the plastic cover above the Keyboard, and below the LCD screen. Has the Power On Button, LED indicator lights, etc in it)

It then loops by the left Hinge, and goes up into the Display Assembly.
There is a small separate wire that comes from the main Video Cable, and connects to one side of the screen Inverter.
The main part of the Video Cable goes on, to connect to the back of the LCD screen.

The wide connector you see at the top/left, connects to the back of the LCD screen.

The wide connector at the bottom/right, connects to the motherboard.
The single cable (Wire) coming off at the bottom, connects to one side of the screen Inverter.

Just due to normal repeated opening, and closing of the laptop; the Video Cable may become pinched.
This leads to it being pulled on, and may also lead to damage of the Video Cable.
(Stretched/Broken wires)

Procedure is to Physically check the connections of the Video Cable. Visual inspection alone will NOT do. You need to physically see if you can plug the connection in tighter.

1) ALL power removed. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.
2) Remove the Switch Cover.

[Switch Cover is just that. A Cover. I will give a link to a free Service Manual from HP Support, towards the bottom of this solution ]

Try to plug the Video Cable connection at motherboard, in tighter.
Once done reinstall the Battery, and attach AC adapter. Plug AC adapter into power.
Turn the laptop on.

Still no? Turn laptop off. (Hold down on Power On button)
Remove ALL power again.

This time check the Video Cable connections at screen Inverter, and back of LCD screen.

The plastic frame in front of the LCD screen is the Display Bezel.

Service Manual indicates to remove Display Assembly from laptop, in order to remove Display Bezel.
IMHO this = NO.
I think you can remove the Display Bezel, without having to remove the entire Display Assembly.

What my concern is with removing the Display Bezel, is the integral Hinge Covers that are a part of it.

I believe the Display Assembly can be tilted far enough back, that the Display Bezel can be removed, and carefully ease the Hinge Covers out/off at the same time.

Why not just remove the Display Assembly?
A whole lot less stuff to reconnect, after you have checked the LCD screen connection of the Video Cable, and screen Inverter connection.

After disconnecting the LCD screen from the Hinge Brackets, you just tilt the LCD screen forward, and check the Video Cable connection.
Then slightly tilt the Display Cover back, so the LCD screen can rest against it, and reinstall power.

Connections are plugged in tighter, and this proves to Not be the problem, go on.
(Don't forget to remove ALL power again)

The Screw Covers are made of synthetic rubber, or plastic.
They are held in place by a type of rubber cement.
I like to use a computer pick, (Much safer than a blade!), and lift up at the base of the Screw Cover.

I also like to GENTLY stick them to the Display Bezel for safekeeping. (They like to stick to the tool, your fingers, and it seems passing cars. "Oops, dropped one. Where'd it go? Hmmmm)

If you are careful with them you can reuse them. (Doesn't stick anymore? Apply a TINY dab of rubber cement to them, with a toothpick)

Screws removed, I suggest cut a piece of thick construction paper, that just fits the inside edges of the Display Bezel.
Helps prevent scratching the LCD screen, from your fingernails, when you go to flex the Display Bezel, and remove it

The LCD screen is an Assembly of layers. They are held in the factory aligned position, by the metal Screen Frame which surrounds them.

There are screws that hold the Hinge Brackets TO the Screen Frame, and there are screws which when removed, will take the Screen Frame apart.

ONLY remove the necessary screws which hold the Hinge Brackets, TO the Screen Frame!

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Very similar to the Fluorescent lamps, (Bulbs), used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

HP Pavilion dv6000z series Notebook PC, is a general series designation. The EXACT model number is on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.

The HP Pavilion dv6000z series of Notebook PC's used either an LED or CCFL type of Backlighting.
Depends on which model it is.

As stated in the above information a Backlight is mounted in the back, or on the side of the LCD screen.
The LCD screen is composed of layers. These layers are held together by a metal frame which emulates a picture frame. If the Backlight is a side unit it will be held in place next to the layers, and inside the metal frame.

[Which means the LCD screen's metal frame, (LCD Panel Frame), needs to be opened on one side.
This will leave the layers which compose the LCD screen loose. The layers MUST be held in the proper placing when changing out the Backlight. Not an easy job to accomplish]

An Inverter is used to change the power coming from the laptop, to be used by the LCD screen, and Backlight.
90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter.

The Inverter for the Pavilion dv6000z series of Notebook PC's is located inside the Display Assembly.

The Display Assembly is the
1) Display Enclosure Cover, (Plastic top of laptop),
2) LCD screen,
3) LCD Panel Frame, (Metal frame around LCD screen),
4) Display Bezel, (Thin plastic frame which surrounds the LCD screen in the front)
5) Camera Module
6) Inverter
7) Display Enclosure Cover Hinges (2)
8) Display Enclosure Cover Hinge Covers (2)
9) Wireless Antenna Transceivers and Antenna Cables
10) Microphone receivers and cables
11) Various mounting screws

[The Top Cover for a Pavilion dv6000z series Notebook PC is essentially the Palm Rest. The cover under the Keyboard]

With the Display Bezel removed the Inverter is located at the bottom.
(Display Assembly removed from laptop first)

HP had a recall for this problem, but the recall has lapsed as of May 31, 2009.

The Pavilion dv9000 series, also has a problem with the graphics chip overheating, and burning up.

Yes, I know. Just a regular ray of sunshine.

Graphics chip:
1) Chip is a slang term for I.C.
Integrated Circuit.

2) A graphics chip is a GPU. Graphics Processing Unit.

The HP Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's use Integrated Graphics, as commonly do a very large percentage of notebook PC's.
The GPU is mounted, { Soldered }, directly to the motherboard.

{Another term for Integrated Graphics is OnBoard Graphics.
On the motherBoard}

The GPU is an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS, that uses the PCI Express technology.

The cooling system of this laptop (Notebook) has a poor cooling design for the GPU.

This causes the GPU to overheat, and burn up.
There is no just replacing the GPU. The fix is to replace the entire motherboard.

I would like to suggest a simple test to see if the GPU is bad first., before going on to replacing the Lid Switch Module.

Hopefully it is just the Lid Switch Module, or perhaps another simple problem I will detail. My thoughts at present, are that it is another small problem.

The test requires plugging in a VGA monitor to the back of the laptop, and seeing if the graphics are good.
(CRT monitor. Looks like a small television set)
Do you have access to a VGA monitor?

[ Bypassing the Lid Switch Module requires removing these components to access it;
1) Battery
2) Harddrive
3) Optical Drive
4) Switch Cover
5) Keyboard
6) Speaker Assembly
7) Display Assembly
8) Top Cover
9) Top Cover Trim ]

On the Left side of the laptop is a VGA port, to connect the VGA monitor to.

Coming from the back of the laptop on the Left side, it is the second port.

VGA monitor plugged into laptop, power on.
Hold the fn key down, tap the F4 key.
Give the VGA monitor time to, 'Come to life'.

VGA monitor comes on?

GPU is good, time to go on with the diagnoses.

The Display Cable also routes through the Left Hinge.
This cable has the graphics signal cable, and the power cable for the LCD Display.

(The Microphone Cable also routes through the Left Hinge)

This cable is very small, and could have easily been pinched, which could cause breakage of the tiny copper wires, inside the insulation sheath of the cable.

If it is pinched, this MAY be visible by observing the plastic insulation of that cable. The cable does get slightly squished with normal usage, though.

With the Left Hinge being loose, and is hard to open anyway, the cable could have become stretched.

This would cause breakage of the tiny copper wires inside, and the outside damage to the insulation of the wire, may not be so readily apparent.

It could also be that the connector that plugs into the motherboard, has simply been pulled loose, or is not tightly plugged in, and is not making a good contact.

I will include the link to the Service Manual from HP Support, in an additional comment.

I do suggest you buy, and wear an inexpensive ESD wrist s-trap, and connect the alligator clip to a good ground source.
(Average cost is around $6)

Continuity test indicates the Display Cable is okay?

( The Display Cable disconnects from the motherboard, and from the Inverter, that is located in the Display Assembly.

The Inverter is what converts power for the LCD display screen, and also the Backlight Lamp.
The Inverter is a small circuit board, located behind the Display Bezel of the Display Assembly.

Cable disconnected from the motherboard, and from the Inverter, a continuity test of the Display Cable is done with a multimeter.

The multimeter is set to the 1K, or 10K scale.
An economical, but decent enough multimeter for this type of testing, can be purchased for around $12 to $15, from a local auto parts store )

Okay, now it's time to replace the Lid Switch Module.

I will give the link to HP Support, and the Service Manual for the Pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 series, in an additional comment so you can disassemble the laptop to access the above.

Have a look at the label on the bottom of the V3000 laptop and check the voltage and amps power rating of the laptop.
If the DV9000 adapter has the same voltage and current rating (amps) or higher amp rating then it is suitable for the V3000 laptop, provided the power plug fits the V3000 power socket.

HP *had* issued service alert 08112101 which covers the left display hinge failure.
HP Notebook Left Display Hinge Program
HP Pavilion Notebook model series affected: dv9000, dv9100, dv9200, dv9400.

This program recently ended on May 31, 2009, but HP may still allow for a grace period.

Otherwise, you'll need the following:
Display panel back panel enclosure (single lamp) 432957-001
Display hinge kit (single lamp) 432963-001
LCD bezel w/ webcam (single lamp) 432955-001

Trained pro's should be able to do this in about 20mins, there is partial lower case disassembly and complete LCD housing dis/re-assembly.

how to replace your laptop hinges:
1) take out the screws at back of laptop under the hinges base
2) or take out the screw at side of laptop near the hinges base (if you find any screw there)
3) there are two cables connect between LCD lid and laptop base
you do not need disconnect those canbles. just careful them
4) take out all scews on the front of lid cover( the scews is covered by thin plastic cover), then take away front lid cover.
5) take out the screws at beside hinge base and side of LCD panel(2-4 scews at one side), you need check the back of lid cover can separate to LCD panel a little., be care replace only one at one time .
6) put back all screws step by step.
