Oil Pressure going up and down during acceleration and decel.

Oil pressure gauge is going up and down from 1 - 5. When you rev the engine the pressure goes up... WHY is that, is there something wrong with the pressure gauge or is it something to do with the motor, like maybe changing the oil again would help?

Hi, this is a faulty oil pump and , it should be replaced asap. make sure the mechanic replaces the oil screen as well.

You can test the pressure gauge and True oil pressure by using the guide below.

Testing the Oil Pressure Gauge

* Test the gauge by grounding the wire that leads to the sending unit on the block.
* When the wire is grounded with the key switch on, the gauge should show maximum oil pressure, or the light should go on.
* If either happens, the gauge and wiring are good and the sending unit is at fault.

Testing Oil Pressure

Pressure can be tested by temporarily installing an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit. Before testing, look up the oil pressure specifications for your vehicle in the appropriate service manual.

* Bring the engine up to operating temperature.
* Now shut the engine off.
* Locate the oil pressure sending unit; usually it is on the lower side of the engine block.
* disconnect the wire from the sending unit and use an Open Ended Wrench to remove the sender. using pliers can damage the unit.

* Tighten the oil pressure test gauge into the hole in the block where the sender was removed.

* Check the engine's oil level and fill, if required.

WARNING
Be extremely careful when working near a running engine. Always wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields when working around moving machinery and be sure that your clothing is not loose.

* Now turn the engine on and check the oil pressure on the gauge.
o Watch as the engine warms to note any excessive drops due to temperature.
o Make sure the engine speed is set to specifications for testing pressure.
o if necessary, us a Tachometer and adjust the engine idle speed.
* Record the measured oil pressure, then turn off the engine.
* Compare the test results with the manufacturer's specifications.
o If the oil pressure is within specifications, this shows that the oil pressure sending unit may not be working correctly.
o In many cases, replacing the oil sending unit will correct the problem.
* After the test is complete, reinstall the oil pressure sending unit, start the engine, and confirm there are no leaks.

Has 358000 miles, just had leaks repaired. Twice since my oil pressure gauge reads no pressure but not all the time? Why

1. Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working You will notice this happens when your oil pressure gauge is not reading, whether the engine is turned off, idle or running. Try to step on the gas to rev up the engine. If the oil pressure gauge still doesn't change its reading, your gauge is busted. It's best to replace it as soon as possible because you won't have any idea if your car is already overheating or not.
2. Oil Pressure Gauge Reading Too Low When your engine is idle, the oil pressure gauge will have a low reading. When the engine starts running or when you're already cruising or on the freeway, your gauge's reading should have increased. If it stays on a low reading, then you now your oil pressure gauge is broken.
3. Oil Pressure Gauge Reading Too High Another common oil pressure gauge problem is when your oil pressure gauge is reading too high when your engine is idle or when it's turned off. Rep

Oil pressure problem

in a shop we ignore the dash gauges and use REAL gauges.
we attach a real gauge to the sender port. on engine block.
and read the true pressure.
the lamp on most cars go on at 3 to 5psi.
this is catastrophic failure. that low.

my guess, is you let oil drop and you wrecked bearings.
but let the real gauge prove that , dont guess.

Why does my oil pressure gauge on dash show low oil pressure when slowing . or during long drives when using low revs

The reason would be physics based. Low pressure can go down to under 10 psi. and be okay. What you do is hook up an external gauge and measure your pressure, both cold and warmed up. Your pressure may be okay.

The oil pressure gage started registering 1/4 instead of it's normal 1/2 even at 1700 rpm. I FREAKED! Thoughts?

I have an oil pressure gauge that reads in analog, 0 to 150? something like that, any way, it moves like a tachometer, idle down around 10, revs up to 55, 60 when taking off and then settles down at 35 while cruising, I notice a change with heavier oil. Also, I know it will read 55 lbs pressure with 1 qt of oil in there, I tried it. So the pressure gauge has nothing to do with amount of oil in engine. As long as it is full, It should be ok, as long as it is reading pressure, but if the pressure drops off, shut it down and find out what happened, If it loses all the oil, the temp light should come on long before the oil light.

I have an 02 wrangler and the oil preasure goes down when Idling is that an oil pump going bad?

First we would need to know when this occurs. Asuming the oil level is at the full mark!. If the pressure goes up during acceleration and down at idle when engine is fully warmed up, then this is normal. An engine requires 10 psi of oil pressure per 1,000 rpm ( ex. 20 psi at 2,000 rpm, 25 psi at 2,500 rpm, and so on ) . If the gauge is moving back and forth erratically at idle , i would say the gauge is bad. If it drops to 0 while accelerating I would say your oil pump is bad. If from time to time it seems to work and other times it seems not to work, I would say the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge is bad. If the pump failed you would start to here a Knocking noise from the engine in a short period of time. Use the above scenario's to narrow down what it may be.

Should the oil pressure gauge fluctuate with speed

The oil pressure guage will fluctuate with engine RPM. At idle it should be approximately 20 lbs./sq.in, at high revs about 50-60 lbs./sq.in. Hope this helps any concerns you may have. Good luck!

Oil pressure drops, metal shavings, and somehow my oil level incr

My truck does the same thing, pressure never drops to 0 but drops low, replaced the oil pressure sensor and same thing happened. My oil is always black and has a lot of metal in it, next time you change your oil, pour a quart of transmission fluid into the oil and let it run for 10 minutes or so, this should thin out the oil and possibly unclog some of the ports that may be gummed up. What could have happened with the dipstick is that the old oil was too nasty to drain all the way, with the fresh oil it could have thinned out and raised the level, try the transmission fluid trick and see what happens, next possibility is to have the engine scoped to see whats going on inside
