Go to figure 2.7.2.4 Front Panel Header and there should be a picture. On the power/led cables, it should say HDD LED, PW, etc, just plug the correct cables into the corresponding pins. Manual Download Here.
Check that the USB cable can provide enough power to the hdd. Check that the USB port is powered. Older USB slots may not have enough power to run larger external HDDs, there you may require separate power to be plugged into the hdd. Are you using the original USB cable provided with the external HDD?
hi this looks like the hdd is not powering up...take the cover of the tower and disconnect the hdd power and see if the motherboard fires up on its owen......unplug the power to the motherboard and wait 5 mins plug it back in see what happens.......on the motherboard were you plug in the hdd led cables and power cable and the led cables and fined the one that has the pwr on it plug it in on its owen see if that helps you
Some of the wires going from the power switch, reset switch, speaker, and LEDs must be attached to the motherboard the correct way. That is, they must not only be placed in the right spot where they need to go, but they also must be connected with positive and negative wires on the right pins.
If your HDD LED is not lighting up when the HDD is "thinking", try reversing the cable where the HDD LED wire plugs in (just flip it so the black wire is where the non-black wire was). I tried to find a good picture of your motherboard to guide you but they were not very helpful. From squinting really hard, I believe the spot they should plug into the board is by the CMOS battery. There might be printed words on the board surrounding the area to connect them that tells you which two pins are for the HDD LED.
Here's a picture of the connection I think you're looking for: http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/msi_p6n_sli_platinum/images/fp_headers.jpg
The JFP1connection is the one you need. I dont know where it is located on your motherboard because you didnt provide a model number, but if you find a connector with JFP1 written next to it, you should see names like HDD(harddisk led), pwr(pwer led) and so on. Then all you need to do is plug your cables in, for the leds it doesnt matter which cable goes onto which pin, for the power switch you should check the cables for + and - .
I also suggest you read the motherboard and tower manuals again.
check your motherboard manual if you do not have it go to www.support.hp.com and look for manuals based on the model. this should give you detailed instructions as to which pins you plug those cables into. usually they are located towards the bottom of the motherboard to the right of your PCI Expansion slots
You are correct, the HDD LED is simply for informational purposes and does not need to be connected. I took a look at the manual for you card (the pictures are pretty bad). It states:
"JP2 - HDD Busy LED Connector"
So are the pin headers labeled? They may have faint white printing near them (or on the back of the card). The one labeled JP2 should be the LED pins.
