I have a craftsman LT1000. The tractor was not used since last summer. I tried to start it but the batterry seemed to be dead. Replaced battery by a brand new one. The startet is truning but the teeth are notg engaging the matung teeth to start the engine. I thought I had a bad starter: got a new one & replaced it ... same problem. What else can cause this problem. I have a Craftsman LT1000 - Tractor has been great no problems for last 5-6 years however; this year It suddenly started sputering and spitting and running uneven while under load. I replaced air filter, fuel filter, spark plug - which seemed to fix the problem for about 5 minutes. Until it starting running poorly again. I checked the spark plug (not fouled) and i checked spark plug is getting blue spark. However; Now she will not start. Original Fuel Filter didn't seem blocked (unable to get a replacement - discontinued according to SEARS Hardware - but same exact stock # as brand new mower :(!) Replaced with Briggs and Stratton Standard In Line Filter. I am stumped on this one! Help Please I'm not a mechanic so I would appreciate some help. Thanks Much!
The starter bendix is not engaging properly the bendix pushes the starter gear into the flywheel gear when the starter spools up, it may need minor lubrication.
It sounds like the engine is not getting fuel as it should, the main jet may be restricted from varnish if she stumbles under a load especially if the plug tips are white after running for 1/2 an hour.
Remove the float bowl and clean the jet, make sure the fuel is still good, gas that smells like a library is more like varnish and less like fuel.
You carburator just needs to be cleaned/adjusted, and if your original fuel filter isnt clogged and looks clean, leave it, but the air filter is a good idea to change at least once a year (grass shavings covered filters dont help the engine much).

I also replaced the original battery with a new Everstart. Not sure if these mowers have magnetos. Anyone have any experiences with regards to fuel filters I can provide model number if needed.
-really appreciated!
