SOURCE: ADF jam

Turn off printer and unplug it from power supply.
Check ADF if it appears to be damaged ( open the top portion so that you can check the mechanisms ) unplug the ADF cable from back of scanner and replug it, replug power cable, turn it on and try scanning using adf again.

SOURCE: keeps asking to load original in document feeder

This has a happy ending. But first, the obligatory narrative:
The HP site has advice on how to deal with a document feeder that doesn't detect your document. It doesn't talk about the opposite problem, which is what molecular is describing. I had the identical problem yesterday. I'd place the original on the glass and it kept demanding that I put the original in the feeder. So I got into a chat session with the HP technician. Her advice, (based on the possibility that a power surge had created the problem) unplug from everything, restart, and retry. The problem persisted. I told her so. She broke the connection. Nice.
So here is how I fixed it. Using the Setup button>Tools>3. Restore factory defaults, I returned the device to its factory settings. I put the original on the glass and it made the copy without a problem.
Here is a pure speculation. There are at least two ways to enter settings related to two-sided copying. I had used one to enter the settings (two-sided original to two-sided copy, as it happens) and later tried to use another button to change those settings. I noticed the 2-sided settings did not change. I believe the feeder is the default for two-sided copying. So when the system failed to clear the settings, it failed to clear the default. Once I returned all settings to the factory originals, the problem disappeared.

SOURCE: Not scanning or copying when using the ADF on HP laserjet 3055

Based on the assumption it's mechanically ok, check the cable connection between the document feeder and the base, if damaged or worked look it can cause errors. If it is a sensor error, check for a small bit of paper or even a staple from a prior jam.

SOURCE: ADF for MP530 does not work

Welp, I pulled out my screwdriver and fiddled around just a bit and got documents to feed again (yay!). I do not believe this is a permanent fix, though, but it was enough to get my document scanned in without me having to feed each sheet manually.

Step 1: Open the document feeder cover. Easy to do, you just stick your hand under it and lift up. It has a little pressure because of the latch but it is designed to give way when you lift hard enough. Once it's open, pull out the little black plastic piece that keeps the cover from swinging all the way open.

Step 2: Unscrew the ADF motor/gear assembly cover. There's a single screw holding it in. Once you unscrew it, you'll need to pull up on the left side of the cover until it pops upward, then you need to push the cover towards the left until it is freed up from the rest of the cover. This one was a little tricky. Several times I thought I might break it (before I realized that I needed to push the cover towards the left) so try not to apply unreasonable force while you're doing this.

Step 3: Close the document feeder cover, put your documents in the feeder and start your scan. Use your fingers to fiddle with the gears while the ADF motor is running and trying to feed documents. I'm not sure if I flicked the little gear upward or downward to get the documents to feed, but one of those ways got the documents to start feeding. Once it started feeding the first page, it seemed to work well for the rest of the pages without me having to fiddle with it anymore.

I am guessing that there is some level that controls the location of the middle gear that needs to be oiled, but I didn't go any further to try and make that happen. Hence this is probably just a temporary fix for now.

Putting it back together is pretty straightforward. Just do the reverse of what you did to get it open.

Hope this helps someone!

When I try to make copies using the ADF the screen tells me to remove documents and place on glass. Can you explain why. I have sveral pages

Automatic document feeder requires you to insert files into holder and let the machine scan through the pile providing you have not over ridden settings to manual.it sounds as if you have switched off adf to manual which would require you to place each document onto glass one at a time.see if you can switch it back to auto in the screen menu.

I am going to assume you are using the Auto Document Feeder for when you are copying and faxing.

When you lift the scanner top (As if you are placing a single document on the scanner glass) there is a small strip of glass to the left (normally) of the main scanner glass. This is the ADF scanner location. You will find that there will be two marks on this glass at the points you get lines on copied and faxed documents. Normally this is ballpoint ink that was not completely dried when fed through the ADF or Twink (Whiteout) that was not completely dry when fed through the ADF. Using rubbing alcohol or other cleaning products of similar gender clean this mess off the glass. If it does not come off it could be actual scratches on the glass which can only be fixed by replacing the glass.

Sharp IR 2016 platine glass dirty

The cover plate is above the glass white surface of the scanner. If this is the same dirty stains will come out on copies.
The glass must be clean.
By feeding the original documents through the ADF, the scanner lamp is no longer the path to scan, the ADF is responsible for passing the original document over the scanner, while it remains still placed on the side under a thin glass is to a large glass side. This also must be clean, otherwise you will be black lines on each point or spot on the glass.
Good luck ...

How does one clean the glass where the document is fed into?

The ADF (auto document feeder) hinges forward. The ADF is located on the top of the machine and is where you place the paper to make a copy. Open that top and using a flash light look for a piece of glass (approx. 1/2" x 9"). With gentle pressure, clean the glass with alcohol. This usually fixes issues related to "steaks on the copy".

When the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to copy I

There are two scan modes when copies are made. When you make copies through ADF you originals go past small **** glass located to the left of the main exposure glass.Any small mark on this **** glass( correction fluid mark, ink mark, small scratch, dust particle and so on)will show as a line on your copy.So to get rid of these vertical lines on your copies you need to clean this small exposure glass.

When I use the adf to copy something there are always two lines on one side of the paper (to mark the copy). How can I change the setting for this problem. It does not occur when not using the adf. Thank...

Hi;

If you are only getting the lines when using the ADF , but not when placing the document on the glass then there is some type of debris on the scan glass.

This is a small strip of glass that is independent of the copy glass. This glass should be to the left or right of the copy glass. Just glean this well with alcohol or windex and try copying again from the ADF and see if the problem is gone.

Good Luck

ADF has something on it causing a stripe on all copies

Lift the document feeder and clean the narrow glass, (next to the glass where you place your originals). Documents are scanned across this glass when automatic feeder is used, thus a small piece of dirt becomes a line down the page.
