Turn off printer and unplug it from power supply.
Check ADF if it appears to be damaged ( open the top portion so that you can check the mechanisms ) unplug the ADF cable from back of scanner and replug it, replug power cable, turn it on and try scanning using adf again.
SOURCE: keeps asking to load original in document feeder
This has a happy ending. But first, the obligatory narrative:
The HP site has advice on how to deal with a document feeder that doesn't detect your document. It doesn't talk about the opposite problem, which is what molecular is describing. I had the identical problem yesterday. I'd place the original on the glass and it kept demanding that I put the original in the feeder. So I got into a chat session with the HP technician. Her advice, (based on the possibility that a power surge had created the problem) unplug from everything, restart, and retry. The problem persisted. I told her so. She broke the connection. Nice.
So here is how I fixed it. Using the Setup button>Tools>3. Restore factory defaults, I returned the device to its factory settings. I put the original on the glass and it made the copy without a problem.
Here is a pure speculation. There are at least two ways to enter settings related to two-sided copying. I had used one to enter the settings (two-sided original to two-sided copy, as it happens) and later tried to use another button to change those settings. I noticed the 2-sided settings did not change. I believe the feeder is the default for two-sided copying. So when the system failed to clear the settings, it failed to clear the default. Once I returned all settings to the factory originals, the problem disappeared.

Based on the assumption it's mechanically ok, check the cable connection between the document feeder and the base, if damaged or worked look it can cause errors. If it is a sensor error, check for a small bit of paper or even a staple from a prior jam.

Welp, I pulled out my screwdriver and fiddled around just a bit and got
documents to feed again (yay!). I do not believe this is a permanent
fix, though, but it was enough to get my document scanned in without me
having to feed each sheet manually.
Step 1: Open the document
feeder cover. Easy to do, you just stick your hand under it and lift
up. It has a little pressure because of the latch but it is designed to
give way when you lift hard enough. Once it's open, pull out the little
black plastic piece that keeps the cover from swinging all the way open.
Step
2: Unscrew the ADF motor/gear assembly cover. There's a single screw
holding it in. Once you unscrew it, you'll need to pull up on the left
side of the cover until it pops upward, then you need to push the cover
towards the left until it is freed up from the rest of the cover. This
one was a little tricky. Several times I thought I might break it
(before I realized that I needed to push the cover towards the left) so
try not to apply unreasonable force while you're doing this.
Step
3: Close the document feeder cover, put your documents in the feeder
and start your scan. Use your fingers to fiddle with the gears while
the ADF motor is running and trying to feed documents. I'm not sure if
I flicked the little gear upward or downward to get the documents to
feed, but one of those ways got the documents to start feeding. Once it
started feeding the first page, it seemed to work well for the rest of
the pages without me having to fiddle with it anymore.
I
am guessing that there is some level that controls the location of the
middle gear that needs to be oiled, but I didn't go any further to try
and make that happen. Hence this is probably just a temporary fix for
now.
Putting it back together is pretty straightforward. Just do the reverse of what you did to get it open.
Hope this helps someone!

happened to me after i fed a page with not-too-hard whiteout on it. the feeder makes the page run through a different piece of glass and i just had to clean it.
