You should have no trouble getting a universal remote to work the basic functions: power, tape motion, etc. But you may have problems with advanced functions such as programming or accessing any special features the model may have. Often only the original remote has all the buttons needed. Universal remotes don't usually give complete control. If you're just looking to play tapes, you should be good with any basic universal remote that.

The remote isn't working (and, yes, I tried new batteries--a couple of times). I need to hit the "TV/VCR" switch. I don't see that same button on the VCR. How can I switch from TV to VCR (and back) when...

I ran into a very similar problem with a TV that I had that did not have a TV/VCR button on it. You HAD to have a remote to change it and the remote for the TV had been LONG lost. The solution was to go to Target or Walmart, and pick up a cheap universal remote. Make sure that the universal remote has a TV/VCR button on it and when you get the right code plugged into the remote it will function just like the original remote.

Remote IR not working?

If you think it'll help, replacing an IR receiver is very easy (if you know how to solder) and very cheap (they're like $2 at Radio shack). Just open up the unit and look for the IR reciever, it'll be in the front of the machine. Here's a picture of one:

Remove it by heating the connections with your iron, and replace it with a new one. Yay!

Can not get universal remote to work

Looks to me like you didn't need a new remote as the old one was working fine, it's just that the VCR remote censor has a fault on it. Or to put it simply it's the vcr that doesn't work, not your remotes.
