When mixing powders we need to operate the mixer at a slower speed than the slowest available speed.
Speeds are controlled by the gearing ratio of the trans. you cant make mixer rotate slower . you could vary the voltage to the mixer but that is prob. not recommended. might be o.k. if mixer is a 3-phase,
No change available. The motor speed if fixed and the 3 speed transmission has fixed gear ratio's. Look at the new HL300 model. It has a stirr speed which is slower than first speed.
Does your mixer havea safety cage? If not, you will need to install one before too long , or the machine will not comply with current safety standards. Put the cost of the safety kit towards the HL300.

How easy would it be to change the gearing in order to slow down a hobart mixer?
It would be practically impossible to do it efficiently. The right gear ratio as well as torque has to be figured in, like the engineers did when they desighed it. Another option, would be to cut your dry batches into two seperate batches.
They are designed to run at a specific speed at the slowest setting. To modify this, will labor and burn out the motor once liquids are adden. They will add drag to the motor. Dry powders only, are not normally mixed with this type of machine. Normallr, a twin, open screw type mixer is used. There will still be a lot of dust though.
