Screen on my laptop will not work. Black screen.

With the laptop powered on, press f8 repeatedly or until screen resumes normal display.

Will it boot? Fan spin? LED's blink? Sound? Try connecting to a external monitor, does it show desktop? The screen is all black, no cursor at top left? No "ghost Image" in the screen when viewed in a bright light? I would look at the inverter board, backlighting, ribbon cable in the rear of the monitor, the LCD screen, your laptop has some miles on it. I had the same problem. While rebooting the laptop the screen would be on for a few seconds after it finished rebooting then the display would go black. If you looked very carefully at the screen you could see the image was there but there was no light behind the screen to make the image visible.

I removed the black plastic display bezel cover that goes around the edge of the display screen to check out the lights and wiring. I found a small magnet that belongs inside the display bezel had fallen out of it's slot in the plastic bezel and was stuck to the inverter pcb (printed cicuit board). To fix this problem I secured the magnet into it's slot inside the display bezel with a bit of glue. After fixing the problem and putting the display bezel back together the laptop worked normally.

This magnet is how the laptop knows the lid is closed. When the laptop is closed the magnet is moved closer to a magnetic switch on the inverter pcb and activates the switch. The laptop thinks it is closed and shuts off the lights behind the display screen. When the magnet fell out of it's slot and stuck to the inverter it activated the magnetic switch all the time whether the laptop was open or closed. This caused the laptop to think it was closed and shut off the lights behind the dispaly screen as soon as the reboot finished.

The display on this laptop is backlit. What that means, in a nutshell, is that the image on the display prevents the output from a constant light source (the back light) from showing through, thus giving a usable image on the screen. From your description, the backlight is no longer operating. This can be an issue with the LCD display panel, the backlight power module, our (less likely) a power trace on the motherboard. Repair would likely cost as much or more than replacing with a used laptop and just transferring your hard drive. If you choose to replace and swap hard drives make certain that the interface on the new laptop is the same as your Gateway's.

I have a Toshiba a505-s6020 laptop and my laptop displays a black screen with nothing else on screen but the keyboard is lights up, and only light shows the power not the hard drive, or the internet, or any of the four lights it normally has displayed on the side. It's likely that your screen is "fried" (faulty) ... try to connect your laptop to an external VGA monitor, and see if the screen shows up (on the external monitor) properly. You may have to toggle the output display (device) from computer screen to external monitor ..using Fn+F3.
If it displays on your external monitor properly, it means your laptop screen is no good. You can replace the laptop screen, or just continue to use the external monitor.
If it does the same (blurry & different color, etc.) on your external monitor, then, your video card/module on your laptop is bad. This usually happens less often.

Does backlight stay on, or does it look like the screen is turned off? If it looks like it is turned off, can you look extremely closely and see your desktop if held in good light?
