95 sl500 fuel tank holds a lot of pressure,idles rough when stopped at idle speed Where is the fuel tank breather hose?

There is no breather hose for the fuel tank, the system is designed as a sealed system to prevent gas fumes from polluting the air it is called the "Evaporative emissions control system", and yes some systems can have alot of pressure in the tank esp on hot days or after a long drive.

It's not there to tell you it's running bad , that should be fairly obvious . It's there as part of OBD 2 to tell you your vehicle is polluting 1.5 times more then allowed by the EPA . You probably have a evaporative emission system problem ! The EVAP system as it is called traps an contains fuel vapors in a charcoal canister an then when the engine computer by it's programming will suck the vapors into the engine . If there is a leak in the system the computer knows an sets codes . EVAP Evaporative Emission Control System

When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

Only a few general concepts, keep in mind that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is an integral part of a vehicles emissions control systems. It operates under the premise of lowering combustion chamber temperatures to reduce the amount of pollutants created by the combustion process. Being closely tied to the combustion process, this valve's operation has direct effect on the overall performance of the engine. Poor or faulty operation of the EGR valve can result in several notable symptoms and leads to increased pollutant emissions.

Poor Idle: An improperly closing EGR valve will act as a vacuum leak, disrupting the correct fuel and air mixture, causing a lean mixture condition. This results in misfiring cylinders and poor engine idle.

Overheating: The basic function of the EGR valve is to introduce exhaust gases into the combustion chamber at specific and controlled rates, lowering combustion temperatures, and lowering pollutant emissions. An EGR valve that does not open properly fails to introduce sufficient amounts of exhaust gases, causing combustion chamber temperatures to rise, leading to overheating of the engine.

Poor Fuel Economy: A sticking EGR valve will not open and close at the proper rate, leading to a reduction in the efficiency of the combustion process due to the lean fuel-air mixture it causes. This results in the engine having to work harder to perform the same amount of work, requiring more fuel to do it. On-board computer systems can also try to compensate for this lean condition by introducing additional fuel to the mixture, further increasing fuel consumption.

Increased Emissions: EGR valves are designed to lower the emission of pollutants from the combustion process. This is done by lowering the temperature of the combustion process through the introduction of exhaust gases into the fuel and air mixture. Lowered combustion temperatures result in more efficient burning of the fuel and air mixture, and less pollutants in the exhaust emissions. An improperly operating EGR valve will not correctly lower combustion temperatures, causing noxious emissions to increase, which can cause a vehicle to fail emissions inspection.

What does check engine light mean

It means your vehicle's computer has determined that a component or system in your emission control system is not working properly.
When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out. To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.
Every vehicle manufactured in the U.S. has to first pass an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test called the Federal Test Procedure. This sets the acceptable limits of wear and/or failure for the emission control system-i.e., what conditions will ultimately cause a Check Engine Light to illuminate. These standards are closely regulated. If the emission control system is faulty and the vehicle is polluting the air, the Check Engine Light illuminates to alert the driver of this condition. (Note: A vehicle in this condition would fail an emissions inspection or smog check.)
Don't confuse the Check Engine Light with the maintenance or service light. These lights illuminate when a routine service is due. They are usually triggered by mileage, gallons of gasoline consumed, or some other type of vehicle-use measurement.

I just bought a 86 MR2 it starts right up but then immediately dies. The previous smog test called it a gross polluter.Any ideas?

could be a mass air flow sensor problem, or a manifold pressure sensor problem. may have several major vacumn leaks that are used to sense and control fuel injection supply pressure and fuel flow. Might check manifold pressure. Check vacumn. inspect lines. there are several lines on air flow inlet. there are several vacumn control valves also. Would suggest obtaining an emmisions line chart. There is usually a decal showing the hose routing on the vehicle some where in the engine compartment.

I have a 2003 cadillac deville, the check engine light came on so i took it to my buddy's garage and hooked it to the scanner and it said it is the pollution control system problem. I never heard of this...

Cost and complexity depends on exactly what trouble codes you found. Post the codes and we can help. Saying that it's the pollution control system is way too broad. There are many components in the system

What is the emission controlls evarorative system

Emission control systems have been incorporated into automobiles to prevent pollution by limiting the amount of partially burned and evaporated gases into the atmosphere. These systems have been efficient in reducing the pollution caused by automobiles to a large extent. Automobiles were first manufactured with exhaust emissions control systems in 1966. Since then technology has undergone several changes that has increased the number of cars which use this technology. The emission released is calculated by quantity released per distance traveled. The types of emissions are tailpipe emissions, life cycle emissions and evaporative fuel emissions.
Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter was developed in the early 70's when severe air pollution was emanate, but wasn't made mandatory by the US government until 1976. The catalytic converter or "cat" for short is one of your vehicles main emission control devices. The name was derived from the operation the catalytic converter performs, it takes a catalyst and converts the unburned gases to burned gases, "catalytic converter".
EGR Valve
EGR valves are used is to lower KNOX (NO2) gases which occur when the combustion chamber when temperature reaches over 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit. KNOX gases have proven to cause brain damage and have been mandatory on most vehicles since 1976. An EGR (exhaust gas re-circulation) this valve controls exhaust gases to enter the intake manifold and flow into the combustion chamber at certain times in the operation of the vehicle. To test your EGR valve remove the vacuum line that is connected to the valve, apply vacuum using a vacuum pump to the valve while the engine is running. If the engine stalls the EGR system is working, if not, the EGR valve may have failed.
Tailpipe emissions are released as bi-products of spent fuel that is combusted inside the cylinders of the engine. These omitted gases consist of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. To control tailpipe emissions measures have been taken to increasing engine efficiency. This efficiency involves technologies such as lightweight vehicle design, regenerative braking, decreased rolling resistance, increased ignition voltage, minimizing air resistance and improving power train efficiency.


Lifecycle emissions are products which are released during the manufacturing, maintenance and disposal of the vehicle. The products include volatile solvents such as auto paint and lubricants, manufacturing plant power waste, oil filter and oil changes, heavy metals, tires, landfills, etc. These kinds of emissions are responsible for creating urban smog which consists of heavy molecular gases which pollute our environment.

Temperature change can result in the evaporation of fuel in the tank because of the development of pressure, this is known as gas tank venting. Recently fuel systems have been equipped with a closed system called EVAP, this allows the vapor to be stored in a charcoal canister until it can condense into a liquid and then returned to the fuel tank.

Another emission control system known as the air injection reactor or AIR, oxygen is injected in the exhaust manifold. This system decreases the bi-products of incomplete fuel consumption.


If the emission control system malfunctions the "check engine" light will illuminate. Scan the PCM for trouble codes, repair the problem, then clear codes to re-test system. Most automobile's have an emission system information label under the hood, or consult a repair manual.

The emission system performs regular test while the car is in use called a "test cycle". Tailpipe emission are measured in parts per million or PPM. Presently, the limit for evaporated gases is two grams of HC per hour, which is about one liter per month. At first, the idle test, which was a two-speed test was conducted in the 1980s. Then it was substituted by the dynamometer test in the late 90's, in the accelerated simulated mode or ASM three gases are tested. Various states and countries have developed unique laws about pollution testing of vehicles.

it could be your pollution part called the idle air control valve in back of throttle body it has hoses and about 3 harness on it controls your idle your pollution stalls cars
