Does it get cold? You can try cleaning the fins-both inside and outside, with windex. Smoling & cooking will create a sticky deposit that will make dist that gets through the filter stick and it won't cool properly.
If it doesn.t get cold any more, try replacing the starting capacitor. About $5. If that doesn't take care of it, just replace the unit. They are cheap enough these days, that you can replace a unit with a more energy efficient unit for the same cost or less as a repair would cost.

Frigidaire AC window unit, model fam185r2a (18,500 BTU) only cools for a few minutes before it cycles off and just fan blows. Then a few min later cool air cycles back on. Is this a thermostat issue?

The window units normally have a sensor thats attached to the front of the indoor coil. This controls the thermostat. I usually pull this sensor away from the coil because it stops cooling before the room is cool. It is attached to the cold coil so it senses the coil temp, not the room temp. You can normally see it when you remove the air filter. Don't break it! It may be a wire or small copper tube

Possible you just need a good maintenance. Clean coils flush and vacuum drain check pressures amps and capacitors change batteries and filter.

Sometimes it blows cold, sometimes it doesnt.

The coils that are located right behind the filter need to be cleaned extremely well. You can purchase a spray from your local hardware dealer that can clean the coils. Also, rinse the fins at the back side of the unit as well. Dirty units can cause this to happen. If you clean it and it continues, you have developed a refrigerant leak. Since window units are so inexpensive today, it is not cost effective to hire someone to come out and find and repair it. Hope this is of help to you.

Window AC takes spells on cooling?

One thing to check is to make sure the evaporator and condenser coils are clean. Any dirt here will short ccle the compressor.
