I have a Compaq Presario c306 us. I wiped the HD and am installing XP Professional on it. However, during the setup it reports that there is no HD, and it goes no further. I've wiped and reloaded dozens of machines and have never encountered this. I don't think it's in need of a SCSI or a RAID driver, and even if it does, the machine doesn't have a floppy drive. Please help!

On the setup screen (First screen after "Setup is detecting your current configoration) press F2 to install RAID drivers for your hard disk

Most likely you have a SATA drive which windows is not detecting. Restart the setup and press F6. You will need to use another system to download the SATA drivers and save to a disk. Then when prompted you can insert the disk. You can also upgrade to XP professional which will almost always recognize the SATA drives. Good Luck.

Recommend removing OLD DOS Operating system First. Then Install Windows XP. XP will NOT upgrade older systems unless it's Windows 98 and Fully Updated. However, can NO Longer do because Microsoft does NOT support any versions other than "2000/ME/XP/Vista".

the smbus controller holds the driver for ur audio device so first try to set the smbus controller driver
if it again shows a ? mark in device driver nothing happenns just make a forced installation of ur audio driver

You require Xp Pro that supports SATA - standard Xp is IDE - you must aquire a copy of Xp that is SATA compatible.

You cannot install Windows XP over WIndows Vista. Microsoft has put a lock on the Vista software and will not allow you to downgrade to a lower software. The only way you can do it is to wipe your hard drive completely clean first with a disk deleting software or with the command "fdisk" at the DOS prompt. However, this is dangerous and I do not recommend it unless you have someone professionally trained to do it. It will wipe everything off of your disk and then you can load Windows XP.

its most likely your hard drive is not recognized by xp because it is a SATA drive. You need to go into your BIOS and set the compatibility mode for sata. or if your bios does not have this option then you need to install the drivers when xp asks if you would like to install any third party drivers during setup check with your manufacturer for the required drivers

Files copy errors during the XP installation process are often an indication of BAD RAM.

If you have dual RAM modules, try install with 1 memory module installed
