New Craftsman 95320 1/2 hp chain drive only opens door ~6"
Replaced a 25+ year old Chamberlain 1/2 hp chain drive that died w/ a Craftsman 95320 1/2 hp chain drive. Did not replace rail or chain both of which seem in very good condition. Craftsman wall unit button works, remote works, both safety sensors have solid/bright lights. Press wall or remote button and garage door opens about 6-8 inches. Door than automatically reverses to close, then reverse to open but only moves door 6-8 inches. Adjusted up/down lift controls on both side and back of motor unit to no avail.

First thing you need to do is determine if it is the opener or the door that is making all that noise. The door is usually the culprit and you can lubricate the roller bearings and each pivot point of the door with silicone spray. Do not use grease and do not lubricate the channels that the rollers roll in. Some WD40 on the springs will help them live longer. The only place to lubricate the opener is the rail if it is a chain drive. Use lubri-plate on it. The screw of a Chamberlain screw drive opener does not require lubricant.
If you cannot get the light on the sensor to come on by tweaking it,making sure it is pointed at the other sensor and your wiring is not broken or shorted then your sensors need to be replaced.
You should check the gears inside the box, After years , the gears get dry and die, you can by online or from Sears the kit and replace the old gears. I just changed mine...not too difficult :) .
how old is unit. sounds like gears are shot, takes $25 of parts and 2-3 hours to fix if you are handy. Take cover off, If it has white powder (Not ****), gears are shot.
My 15 year old system broke down due to a worn screw drive. While parts like this can be replaced, it takes a bit of guts to work inside the motor, and the circuit board. I chose to buy a new unit. New units come with all the parts ... so you don't really save much, Depending on how old the system is, the old accessories may or may not work. Even though my old 1/2 H.P. motor was a chain drive, when I bought a new screw drive the mounting parts on the ceiling and on the wall above the door were compatable. So while you get the new parts in the box, you can use the old parts if it saves you time. I was not able to save the electic eye components as the number of wire leads was slightly different in the new model. It took me and my son about 2 hours to get the old one down and the new on up. Hope that helps. (by the way, the new chain drive is quicker and quieter)
