Do it the easy way.
In the ASUS turn off dhcp server.
Change its ip to the same range but different ip to the netcomm and outside the dhcp range. ie. if the netcomm is 192.168.1.1 and hands out addresses from 2-100 make the Asus 192.168.1.254 which is the top address. (I have no idea what netcomm you have so you will have to figure this out. ) If you want more detail tell us exactly what IP addresses the modem and the Asus are using.

Last step. Plug the modem into a LAN port of the ASUS, not wan. It will then work fine as wireless access point.

does it say the ssid of the netcomm if so just hit start start and accept the ssid then just use all the defaults to connect.

if the wireless is encrypted it may be asking for a network key and you have to find that. it would have been the wireless passcode that you set when setting up the router if it has one. by default there is not one.

If I get you right you are useing a 3g Internet connection and have a router wich conets the 2 computers together, the problem is that you can't share the internet connection.
Without any information about the operateing systems I can tell you the idea:
First you need to disable DHCP server on the router and use static IP addresses on both PC, the IP address should be something like

PC1:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Network mask:255.255.255.0

PC2:
IP: 192.168.0.3
Network mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.2

In this IP configuration above PC1 has the 3g modem connected.
This was the easy part, hard part is to share the internet connection on the network, that's a little different ritual on every operateing system, try to use google to get your specific one.


However there's a much more easier way to solve all your problems if you can't make it work, but it costs money. All you need to buy is a 3G router and that will do the same thing for you what your old router did.
I did a little search for you on Australian Ebay to see what you can get.
But I'm sure you have your own cheapbfavourite source of computer hardware as well.

when I go to network settings-->advanced--> wireless, it tells me that the wireless adapter was not detected.

Where are you getting this message from?
