Troy Bilt Tiller tines do not engage

I have a Red Horse Troy Bilt tiller. The wheels turn but not the tines. The trouble shooting section indicates that I should adjust the PTO/Clutch but does not give directions to do so. Any advice? The tiller is less that 2 years old.

have you ever taken off the rear tines gearbox? Try taking it off and see what condition the clutch is in. I haven't looked at mine recently, but I think you just add shims to increase the clutch tooth engagement. Matt

You likely have a clutch problem, never saw one that a simple adjustment would fix. I'd take off the tiller (there are two bolts that hold the tiller portion to the transmission, and check to make sure the clutch is sliding in and out. My hunch is either the lever is loose on the shaft or the allen-head little bolt that they use to shift the clutch has come out. Be sure to grease the clutch while you're in there.

This should be covered in your owners manual. Shame on them if they didn't mention this.

without a proper model number it is guess work, but either the drive belt has snapped, or if the right wheel drive the left wheel, there may be a half moon key way or a shear pin. General help here, followed by parts suppliers

Troy built horse loses power when I engage tines into the dirt. What do I need to service?

sounds like you are trying to till too deep raise tines up a little with the depth gauge then till the same spot again and see if that helps

1980 pony rear tine tiller: when I put it into gear it just sits there and will suddenly lurch ahead uncontrollably.

That will happen when the tines are engaged while the wheels are in Neutral as the tines simply drive the whole machine forward without the drag of the wheels being in gear. If the wheel transmission is engaged and this is still happening, then you have need for repair.

Troy-bilt horse engiine runs good , tines work,

The wheel shaft on a Horse tiller is one piece so if the shaft turns on one side it will turn on the other. make sure the pin that holds the wheel on is not missing that would let it spin on the shaft.
That's the only thing I can think of that would cause that problem. Hope that helps.

That's the engine number. It's a 6Hp Tecumseh. Go on ebay and buy the Troy Bilt parts manuals on CD for Horse Roto Tillers (if that's what it's on). I paid $8. Definitely worth it.

Does a troy bilt horse tiller have a shear pin in the gearbox that drives the tines. I am thinking about buying one and the seller said that the wheels turn but the tines do not when he puts then in gear.

Yes there will be a shear pin
It may also have an engagement cable adjustment issue

I can't move my Troy-Bilt tiller unless it's running.

Some Troy Bilt Tillers were designed with a manual "free-wheel". If yours is a Tuffy (and maybe a Junior), you have to pull pins out of the wheels to move the tiller without starting it. The larger tillers, Pony's and Horses, had a lever to shift to release the wheels.

How do i put a troy-bilt tiller 3 hp.into free

The way to move without the motor running...

1.on each wheel pull pin in center of hub
2.push wheel closer to motor.
3.put pin back in to axle but not though hub
4.do the same steps to other wheel
now you can push tiller

Troy bilt horse pto clutch will not disengage

The problem is lack of lubrication in the pto coupling. Losen the two swing bolts carefuly,block the front under the motor. Separate the tine transmision from the housing and grease both sides with as much grease as you can work in. Work the lever as you do this. Should fix the problem.
