Safest is way to install a removable drive tray such as Welland EZStor ME-751 Trayless HDD Rack 5.25" Bay for 3.5" SATA HDD/SSD - Anti-Shock, Scratch-Proof.
Then you can swap HDD anytime.
You can also install new (now upgrade) Windows 8.1 on a 2nd HDD internally. But sometimes the 2nd OS can damage the first OS if ou are not careful with C: drive letter.

try to format the external HDD using command prompt.....
type "cmd" in start & search box and hit enter...
command prompt will be opened...
Now type "format X:" where X=your external hdd drive letter....
if it does not format then right click on my computer icon> goto manage >select Disk management> select the external drive> right click and delete partition > again right click and select create partition > again right click and select Format drive.....
this will fix the issue....
SOURCE: Why won't my external hard drive safely eject? I
Hard drives won't safely eject if there's any program working with any files in that hard drive. For example, if you have a word document open from that hard drive, it won't eject.

You need to install some components like lacie desktop manager, intrergo etc that came with the original device
Look for them on lacie's webpage

SOURCE: I have the Thermaltake BlacX
I know it might sound a bit simple, but let's start at the beginning.
Make sure that the power is properly plugged in, and that it's securely plugged into the USB port.
Put in the hard drive you will be using.
Now turn on your device by clicking on the power button.
Listen out for a "ding" or a chime in your OS.
If you DO hear one, the hard drives may need to be properly formatted or not properly assigned.
If you hear a chime, go to your desktop and right-click on "Computer" and click "Manage"
Go to "Disk Management" and at the top, there are a few options, and check for your hard drives, and right-click on the proper one and click on "Change Drive Letter and Paths" assign it a letter, and check "Computer" to see if came up.
