My nikon coolpix s210 will not transfer my pictures to the computer

I attach the usb cord to the camera and computer, turn the camera on and press on the icon. I press start transfer but nothing will transfer and the menus are shaded out

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

I have a Intel Mac Powerbook running OS10.5.8
On a coolpix 100, the default setting is that the camera is charged by the computer through the USB cable. You need switch that OFF.
While the camera still does not show as usb device, you can access it through the Nikon transfer program AND through iPhoto

I can not download pics from my coolpix s210 to my laptop. The autoplay does not come on. I used the Nikon software suite disk to load on my laptop. But no transfer of pics???
