SOURCE: no compressed audio on hdmi

You probably need to take that issue up with the setup of the unnamed device originating the signal.

VUDU has movies in DTS 5.1 but a digital optical cable does not send 5.1 signal to the amplifier

Optical connections will only carry compressed Dolby Digital 5.1, compressed DTS 5.1, and uncompressed PCM 2.0 (stereo).

But your Blu-ray player should have an audio output setting so that master quality soundtracks on Blu-ray (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, PCM 7.1) can be downmixed to DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1.

That way the optical cable will be able to get a usable audio format, regardless of what format of audio you choose from the disc (some Blu-rays do not technically have the older audio formats, they rely on the player to play the backward compatible version that is embedded within the master audio track).
