How do I replace the door latch on my dishwasher?

The latch mechanism in the door of my dishwasher isn't working. When the door is closed and you press the handle the latch doesn't disengage. I need to know the replacement part number and removal/installation instructions.

It is an 2005 Admiral dishwasher:
Model Number - DDB1501AWW
Serial Number - 28716273GP

Don't try to bend anything! The latch mechanism in the door is probably broken. Open the door and remove the 11 torx screws holding the inner panel on. You will probably find broken plastic bits on the pathetically flimsy latch; mine failed after 4 years and I expect it to happen again.
If you do, see the link given in "I Have 3 problems with my dishwasher, my...",
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5168615&diagram_id=1349844#d1349844 Unlatch the two switches and slide them off the old part and onto the new one, observing all the obvious precautions about not getting shocked and putting the switchess on correctly. Reassemble the door and latch with the screws.

P.S. Be sure you order the correct part. Since my latch *handle* was broken, I needed LATCH ASSY (WHITE) BR (P/N AP4264083), not Latch, door (P/N AP4481280) which doesn't include the handle.

Very quickly without seeing the machine , it might only need moving the latch forward a little bit there are screws that might have become loose over the years , or you can try bending the door latch a bit to make a better fit , this seems to me to be only a minor adjustment not a failure

PDW8100 Dishwasher went through cycle several times, but I am unable to open the door. Is there a way to get it open? Thanks, Barbara

Hi,

When your dishwasher door has a problem, check these:

Latch
Springs
Hinges
Door seal
Latch The latch on many dishwashers is adjustable. If your door is easy to close but difficult to latch, adjust the latch to let the door close more easily. If you can't see any way to adjust the latch, yours may be fixed in a certain position. Check for other reasons for the latching problem.

If the latch has worn out in a way that makes it impossible for you to close the door properly, you probably need to replace the latch.

Springs Your dishwasher has two springs that counterbalance the weight of the door. If either or both of these are broken, the door feels quite heavy and you need to replace both springs.

Hinges The hinges are important to the door closing properly. If they're bent or deformed, you probably need to replace them. Once bent, only rarely can they be straightened well enough.

Door seal If your dishwasher is new--or if you have just replaced a door seal--the door may be difficult to latch for a week or two. If the tightness persists, though, try adjusting the latch, if it's adjustable. If it's not adjustable, there's probably nothing you can do immediately. But try running the dishwasher on the highest heat cycle to help the seal conform to the door. Otherwise, the seal should compress over time.

Goodluck..

Door won't stay latched on dishwasher

Make sure nothing is binding the racks which could be pressing against the door when closed. Also make sure the dishwasher isn't installed too tightly in its place, which puts pressure on the latch. You may need to lower the leveling legs a bit.

Will only run if i push in the top control panel then stops until i push again kudp01lwh6

Sounds like the door switch isn't being activated all the time. Make sure nothing is binding the racks which could be pressing against the door when closed. Also you can try bending the door latch a little to see if it holds better. Also make sure the dishwasher isn't installed too tightly in its place. You may need to lower the leveling legs a bit. May need to replace the door latch if those don't help.

It won't close, so it won't start, the latch doesn't click shut.

Seems to be a mechanical fault as only if the door closes the safety switch will latch on which will initiate the program to move forward.
What is require is to push the release many times , use a de-greasing spray into the door latch mechanism. if this wont work you might need to reassemble the door latch mechanism.- if mechanically minded.

I push start and my dishwaher wont turn on. I have checked the other buttons and they work. I also turned off my breaker to see if that will help and it still doesn't turn on,

either:
  1. something blocks the door from latching or closing. Check, if anything is stuck behind a dishrack. try reversing lower rack. check if the door aligns properly and dishwasher is installed correctly
  2. latch switch failed/latch mechanism is broken. Disconnect dishwasher from power. Disassemble door, check latch, check latch switches for continuity
  3. touch panel or control board (less likely) is failing. replace if none of the above is working for you.
Good luck,

Dishwasher will not latch

more than likely the safety clasp inside of the door panel is broken. On the dishwasher at the top where the latch fits there should be a small metal shaft extruding from the dishwasher side. This shaft, when the door is closed, pushes a bar inside the door to release the latch for closing. If this shaft is protruding from the dishwasher side and insert into the door slot then the latch mechanism in the doior itself needs replacing. If the saft is missing then it needs replacing. Get the model and serial #'s off the unit and take them to an appliance parts house for the proper part replacement.

Hope this helped you

The door on my dishwasher will not close

There are a few problems that can occur with the diswasher door assembly. These usually involve the latching mechanism, the door seal, the counterbalance spring assembly or the hinges. 1) The door latch plate can occasionally become out of alignment. Some door latch plates are adjustable, some aren't. If yours is adjustable, try loosening the retaining screws and repositioning the plate. It's trial-and-error, so have a lot of patience. If this doesn't work, then the latch needs replacing.
2) A new dishwasher or a newly installed door seal can be difficult to close for a while until the seal softens and compresses over time. You can try adjusting the latch, if possible.
3) If the door feels unusually heavy, there could be a problem with the counterbalance spring assembly. These counterbalance assemblies allow the door to open and close easier and are held by two springs. On some dishwasher models, holes are positioned in line so you can re-tension the springs by moving the spring hooks to other tensioning holes. If any of these springs break, they will need to be replaced as a pair.
4) The door hinges might be bent. They can seldom be adequately fixed and should be replaced.
hope this helps
