I have the first xbox its not been used in a while but was working fine the last time it was used about a year ago but now the green light comes on then goes all red with just a blue screen
Cracked solder points try turning it on with the fan unpluged and wait untill you get the 2 red rings lights 1 and 3 then wait until the xbox shuts off then wait a couple of min. then reconnect the fan and turn it on to see what happends.

Check out the xbox website and use the warranty verification tool to see if it is still under warranty. I believe the consoles with three red rings get an additional couple of years under warranty...
My Toshiba dlp 62hm116 was used for 3 months then stored for 2 years, I turned it on yesterday and it makes a loud grinding noise which I think is probably from the exhaust fan area and the picture is black except white at both vertical sides. It worked fine the last time I used it 2 years ago. Any ideas?
just got mine fixed call1-800-469-9269 took one week to get it back one of the first xbox 360 to come out . red death ring is because it over heated .didnt cost me anythang they even sent me the boxes to ship it in
This exact thing is happening to not only me but to also a friend of mine. You will probably notice that the fan kicks on really high and then goes to 2 flashing red lights, this is because the 360 is overheating or thinks its overheating. My friend's 360 starts up with the fan kicked on high and then only plays for a minute or 2, followed by the 2 red lights. If its under warranty send it back to Microsoft, I took mine and my friends 360 apart and replaced the thermal paste with arctic silver, but it kind of only helped a little for mine and not at all for my friends. SEND IT BACK!!!!!!
3 Blinking red lights often means that your Xbox 360 has suffered from hardware failure.

Blinking red lights means that your Audio / Video cable is not
correctly connected (it's the colorful one; Red, white, yellow; green,
blue, red if Component)
If it IS just three lights, and you bought your xbox 360 under three years ago, call 1-800-4MY-XBOX
I believe this is related to the GPU (graphics processor unit). I think the only cheap fix is to take apart the unit, use a heat gun and lightly go over the board. This has worked for me about a year ago.
"a period of one year (three years for conditions that cause three
lights on the ring of light on the front of the Console to flash red)
starting as of the date of your sales receipt for the purchase of the
Console, or (ii) as applied to an Accessory, a period of 90 days
starting as of the date of your sales receipt for the purchase of the
Accessory"
So 1 year from the day you buy it of any damage to it.
Then 3 year warranty of the "3 red lights" (red ring of death) couple weeks ago (including me) experienced the 3 red lights, so Microsoft extended everyone's warranty for another 3 years only on the 3 red light issue.
I've only had to send in my 360 1 time and that was of the red lights, other then that no problems.
I hope this helped, also you can connect that Xbox at 1800-4my-xbox for any questions.
and if you do try to fix it yourself, or you've voided the warranty ( by already opening it) make sure you DON"T do the " towel Fix " it will only make things worse. you need to do an X Clamp repair. It's simple. I had no experiance whatsoever.with electronics. and I was able to figure it out the first time I tried it. I did it three weeks ago and my X box is quieter than ever and it works fine. so serach on you tube " X Box 360 X clamp fix " and you should see what you need to fix your problem.
Does it say contact xbox on the screen?
