Two possibilities I can think of.. Dipstick not fully inserted... or is it possible that you have overfilled the crankcase with oil??? On my VW, I learned the hard way to take special care when checking the oil level with the dipstick... I had to fully remove the dipstick... clean it off... and THEN reinsert it... and pull it back out.. and then look to get an accurate oil level reading... It must have something to do with how the dipstick tube runs down into the crankcase....

you need to check the drivers door lock unit. this is a more common problem where the switch fails and the anti-theft system doesn't get disarmed by the door unlocking

SOURCE: 2000 volkswagon beetle mis firing

Very common for the coil pack to fail on this model, also the plugs are a pain to change and are often left, try these first.

What could be the problem with my 2003 volkswagen beetle? It has a hard time going uphill and it blows steam out the exhaust.

Its sounds like the VW Beetle has blow its head gasket & water is in the oil. Try getting a compression test done & a oil sample along with a coolant sample to see the really problem. I would image its a blow head gasket.

Blue smoke is generally oil. You may have a ring going bad. If this is the case you can try getting some engine restorer that helps seal the rings.
