Don't you have a manual? If not, try unplugging and waiting 10 seconds and plug it in again. There is also a clear button. I saw a great demonstration of this machine on www.youtube.com, looks like a very nice machine.

When the needle broke, it could have caused the needle/hook timing to lose its timing. There are web sites and videos that show how to repair it yourself, or you may just want to take it in for service.

this is the Brother support website and many manuals are available there.

Click on the Blue word "manuals" then choose your language to open the PDF file.

Once file has opened you can save to your PC - use the icon that looks like a clipboard to do this. Then you can print and view the file anytime.

The only download I could find for your sewing machine on the Brother website is the manual in French.
A Startpage.com search for "Brother VX1140 manual" turns up many sites offering paper manuals for sale - the lowest price I saw was $7.99 plus shipping.
