A long black line on scanned images is usually caused by a piece of trash on the scanning mechanism.
Look at the scanning arm (the thing that moves when you scan something) and then see if it has any trash on it. If it looks good then you may have a mechanical malfunction in that part.
Let us know hat you find.
You can probably fix this yourself then. Lift the scanner glass lid and look for a piece of trash on the little strip where the paper passes over the scanner head. What happens is this:
When you scan from the scan glass the scanner head moves and scans the piece of paper. When you scan from the tray the scanner head stays still and the paper moves over the scan head. Why does this matter? If you have any trash laying above where the scan head "parks" while scanning from the tray then it shows up as a black streak because the scan head is not moving. So look under the lid. On my particular HP model it actually has instructions for cleaning this piece. What model HP do you have?

My problem happens with I feed a document through the upper tray, not lay on the scanner glass. Gives me a black line down the center of the page when it prints the copy.
