When I put a doc on the glass to copy -the print has a black vertical line down the page. When I print from computer to print - it works fine - there is no line of ink. Can I fix this myself? What would u reccomend

  • c_loth May 22, 2009

My problem happens with I feed a document through the upper tray, not lay on the scanner glass. Gives me a black line down the center of the page when it prints the copy.

A long black line on scanned images is usually caused by a piece of trash on the scanning mechanism.
Look at the scanning arm (the thing that moves when you scan something) and then see if it has any trash on it. If it looks good then you may have a mechanical malfunction in that part.
Let us know hat you find.

You can probably fix this yourself then. Lift the scanner glass lid and look for a piece of trash on the little strip where the paper passes over the scanner head. What happens is this:

When you scan from the scan glass the scanner head moves and scans the piece of paper. When you scan from the tray the scanner head stays still and the paper moves over the scan head. Why does this matter? If you have any trash laying above where the scan head "parks" while scanning from the tray then it shows up as a black streak because the scan head is not moving. So look under the lid. On my particular HP model it actually has instructions for cleaning this piece. What model HP do you have?

HP Officejet Pro 8600 vertical lines on all copies

I had the same problem; it happened with the first copy I tried to make directly from the printer's console - but only with the Black ink function - with the same original on the flatbed glass I then tried the Color function and it worked fine. But when I tried the Black copy function, the strong vertical lines appeared again - about 7, evenly spaced across the page and running the entire length of the page.

Nothing about cleaning any part made sense: the printer was brand new, out of the box, the color ink function worked fine to copy; so did making scan copies. It was only the black ink mode in the copy function with the original on the flatbed glass that produced the vertical lines.

What cleared it up was shutting it down, removing and re-inserting the power cord the other way, i.e., turning it around (which might have nothing to do with the outcome) and Voila! - no vertical lines with the black ink copy function - Go figure...

When I use the feeder either for scanning or copying, the page has a black vertical line . When I make normal copies or print outs it is fine, only the feeder makes the black line. Thank you

Under the Automatic Document Feeder is a small glass.
This glass becomes dirty, creating lines on the page.
open up the scanner cover and clean the glass

Copies are being printed with a line vertically down the side of the page. Only happens when copying using the hopper.

If it's a thin, sharp line, it's just a blob of ball-point pen ink on the scanner glass. Lift the lid, and you'll see the narrow strip of glass that the scanner uses when you feed a document through the feeder. Clean that with a rag dampened with window cleaner, or, better yet, alcohol. Even a dot of ink too small to see will show as a solid black line on anything you copy, scan, or fax via the doc. feeder.
Don't use so much cleaner that it runs under the glass.

Black vertical lines on copies and scans from auto

This means the read area is dirty. Clean the glass with glass or lens cleaner at the area where you place the head of the paper if you wanted to lift the cover and scan a page without the autofeeder. There may be white out or toner stuck to the glass. This can be removed with a glass blade.
This answer assumes that prints from the computer are fine...

HP OfficeJet J5780 Vertical Black Line Prints when copying or scaning only. Cleaned rollers and changed black ink cartrigde. Still problem.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.

Vertical black line on side of copies only when using autofeed

Clean the small piece of glass on the flat bed. Should be on the left side of the flat bed when you lift the doc feeder.
