You cannot delete existing mp3 files/directories directly from the player but it is possible from the computer. Connect your mp3 player to a PC using the USB cable. It should become visible as a mounted removable drive.

If you can't see it, go to settings -> system and switch the UMS mode at the bottom of the list so it can become visible.

You should be able to see the drive in windows explorer and on Windows, you may even be asked as the drive connects if you want to view files,

Simply go to the directory structure, click through to music and delete files/folders that you no longer want. You can copy over new files from wherever you store your music, too. It's the same connection/viewing process.

I want to empty out all existing songs.

According to CommunitySony.co.uk: "you cannot simply delete files straight from your MP3 player although you should be able to do this by connecting your MP3 player to your pc then click and open Computer > Walkman > Storage Media then look for your walkmans music file select the track you want to remove & press Delete. Make sure you do not delete the actual Music folder though."

Putting new songs on instinct that are already there?????? please

Even if they do exist, just do overwrite all. Make sure you do it in the music folder. Whenever you try to copy them onto the phone, just do overwrite.

When i transfer music from my library it deletes all existing tracks from device

Are the existing tracks still on your computer? Most mp3 devices won't keep existing music on the device unless told to do so. Basically, don't delete any playlists or tracks from the program that you are using to transfer the music.

Deleting

you may have to reformat the MP3 player by clicking on the drive its listed under and right click and go to Format. Formatting is done with FAT, not NTFS. This will remove any games or other data on it too. Sometimes the reset thing might work. In general, anything you erase from it using a computer should erase off the MP3 player too.
