Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I am going to assume your compressor and condenser fan is running. Your condenser fan is in the lower back of your freezer.

You will need to remove the back cover in your freezer. There are 6 screws holding it on.

Check the following (Cover Removed):

1.) Frozen Drain - Your freezer goes into a defrost mode every 8-10 hours, where your freezer shuts down except for the lights, and your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes to defrost your cooling coil. If you have a frozen drain, the condensate builds up behind the back wall and icing the cooling coil, restricting air flow. You must defrost the coil.

2.) Freezer Fan Motor Failure - Having removed the back wall observe if the freezer fan motor is running. If not replace.

3.) Refrigerant Restriction or Leak - If you observe a large build-up of ice in the upper right hand corner, then you have a restriction or leak. The cost of repair would be about $400.00

4.) Bad Thermostat - In the upper right hand corner of you cooling coil, attached is your thermostat. They can explode, where the back of the thermostat will raise up.

You can also check it with a multi-meter, set to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol). You need to cut the wires, leaving enough wire length to rewire back in. Put the thermostat in a glass of ice water for 10 minutes. After, it should Ohm out around 16. It is reads '0' or infinity it is bad. Below 15 or 16 it is bad

Check these two things first.  1.  Is there a thick frost buildup on the back panel at the bottom half of the freezer?  2.  Do you hear the fan running inside the freezer?  Let me know what you find.

SOURCE: My GE upright freezer does not get cold.

Sounds like the system is low on freon. The other common problem is a dirty condenser. Insure the condenser is clean, if it is. You will need to charge the system with freon. Which only a qualified refrigeration tech should do.

SOURCE: problem with upright freezer not freezing

It sounds like the unit is low on freon or the compressor is going bad. You have several other components that could be affecting this as well. Make sure the coils are free from dust and clean underneath. This is a bit premature for you to have problems now, especially since it is a Sears product.

SOURCE: My upright freezer won't get cold. We unplugged

Hi, when you defrosted this upright, did you use hot water or a heat gun to do this? No sharp pointed objects at all? I'm sorry to ask that, but have to as I have seen this many times ending in a tiny hole in the evaporator coil and loosing all of the freon over night. Nothing but the small condenser fan would be on. With the lights on we know there is 120 volts to the unit. If the freezer fan is not on it's because it is temperature operated and comes on at a certain factory set temperature. Sounds like it may well be the thermostat control inside not calling for cooling. It will have an aluminum long probe on it that senses the box temperature. The control that raises and lowers the box setting. Check to see if it is working by turning it slowly colder and see if you hear a very light click at all? This is what brings this system on and shuts it off when satisfied. The unit may be stuck in the defrost position not letting it come on. It may also be the defrost thermostat that is located in behind the panel inside the unit, back panel along with the defrost heaters. This box should go into defrost on its own and you should not have to defrost it. For now, concentrate on the thermostat control. If you can't get it to start, unplug it and try pulling this stat out just enough to see if something has come loose as a wire. This does happen. There is not a lot that you can check on your own. I am trying to give you some ideas according to what you have said that happened. So, if you know there is no way you may have chipped away at the ice and put a small hole anywhere, we know you have freon in the system. If you can get to the wires on the stat, you can test it with a jumper wire if you have a piece of 12 to 14ga. insulated wire laying around. If so, pull it out enough to see the wire terminals. Be careful as you will be plugging it back in!! I don't want you to take a shock, so please be careful. I know you can do this safely. Now, just take one end...make sure both are stripped and hold it on a terminal by the insulated part. Take the other end and depending on how many terminals it has, touch it to all, but the green ground wire terminal, one at a time and see if it starts. You will see it spark but don't panic this is normal. If it starts and runs, that control is bad and will need to be replaced. You can get all the numbers, serial, model, name and all and get one at a appliance parts house. If the unit does not start, contact me by my user name and we will go deeper into it. I believe it will be this control. Best of luck,
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

Kenmore upright freezer. The alarm keeps going off?

The light may be staying on and creating heat, or the unit thinks the door is still open.

Or the door seal is worn and is letting cold out.

Or

It needs gas.

Have you put a thermometer inside to check the temperature? It should be 0'F +/- 2'.

You have a Kenmore upright, which you set on ZERO? WHY?
Every time you open the door all of the cold air falls out and it has to start over in the cool down cycle, the fan stops to NOT push all of the COLD out while the door is open - you should consult a professional. Not for the freezer, for your ability to understand.

My Kenmore Freezer, 5649215011, won't get cold

Yes it is. You probably have a bad capacitor since it probably as been outside for this long. It is subject to aging even when not in use. This should be an inexpensive job.

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have an old Kenmore upright freezer. I would like to leave it in my unheated patio over the winter. Should I leave it plugged in, or can I unplug it and just watch the...

Leave it plugged in. It won't over freeze. If the outside air is cold then it won't need to run as much to bring down the temp-nature is doing that. So when the weather gets warm it will run to keep everything frozen. Hope this helps. Google burdfrenzy
