SOURCE: Gas oven problems

The oven probably uses electric start. There might be a breaker in there that popped.

SOURCE: oven quit working

Hi. this is common in many old gas range ovens. There is a set of coils that are attached to the gas valve assembly. These coils , when activated and operational, open and close the main and secondary valves in this unit. They are controlled by the main ERC(clock/oven control board). I recommend checking these coils and there respective wiring harnesses. if the clips and wires are worn and corroded, simply replace the entire wire harness.

Now, if the wiring harness and wires that are connected to the coils look good and there are no signs of corrosion on the wires and connector clips, this will confirm that the coils have failed and you will need to replace them.

You can also preform an additional test with a multimeter. simply connect your multimeter or voltage meter to both terminal posts located on the coils. once your meter is connected, start the oven cycle. you should register some sort of current during this test at this time. if the current is sufficient and the coils do not initiated the valve action, this will confirm coil failure. if the meter dosen't register a current during oven operation, this will confirm ERC(control) failure. you will have to replace the Oven control board in this case.

The Most common issue in this situation will most defiantly be the coil assembly and not the control.

Please rate and god bless:)

SOURCE: My Kenmore gas stove model 790, the oven will not

It appears your thermostat/probe has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

SOURCE: I have a kenmore gas

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

Based on your description, I`d suggest it is the hot surface ignitor for the bake burner that is likely the problem.

Here's what you can try to verify if it's indeed the ignitor...if you're mechanically inclined. It'll look like this...

macmarkus_239.jpg

** FIRST unplug the range and turn off the gas to the appliance before attempting any service...safety first**

some model ranges have in use an upper broiler the same as the lower (bake) ignitor ( some do some don't, the complete model number already does confirm this...with only the bracket perhaps being slightly different ) one could swap the ignitor`s ( very carefully, they are very fragile and don`t like to be handled ) this will allow you to use the bake burner, but it will leave you without the broil function...until you can purchase another.

Here's a helpful link...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLxKoF16gac&feature=player_embedded#at=20

This will confirm or dismiss if the ignitor is at fault...99% of the time this is the case.
Many people overlook the ignitor, especially if it "glows" since that gives the untrained person the impression it works...that is not the case however. (Ignitor may glow but not have sufficient amperage to open valve, or open the valve slightly, even intermittently...but not hot enough to ignite the gas).

As far as checking them you don't actually need a clamp on (though it is the preferred method) you can also ohm it out to test it as follows...

macmarkus_238.jpg
You should be able to find one at most brick & mortar appliance parts vendors or on-line depot's such as "repairclinic.com", "searspartsdirect.com" to name a couple.

You can ask for part number based on the model number for the bake & broil ignitor. The number I use in most applications (it's fairly universal and replaces both long and short ignitors)... is part #12400035.

I would still double check with your model number with the part`s professional`s if you're more comfortable with that.

Hope that help`s. Let me know if I can assist you further or if anything is not clear and good luck.

Thank`s for visiting "fixya" for your repair needs. Please take a moment to rate the assistance you received here and a brief testimony is also appreciated.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Kenmore gas range model #790-77471790 oven stopped working...broiler and stove top still work

If the oven has stopped working but the broiler continues to work, it would imply that the bottom heater is broken. When you are using the oven, both the heater for the broiler and the bottom heater are at use. The broiler only uses the top heater.

Frigidaire gas range oven won't come on

the oven ignitor needs replacing, this is the part that makes everything works, it's a glow coil in side the oven, nest to the burner, that is the electronic pilot, when it goes bad the safety valve, the one that sends gas to the oven will not open to light the oven burner.
