I was running my Toshiba Satellite A135-S2376 when the screen completely froze. The cursor wouldn't move, and I could not restart the computer with control-alt-delete. I held the power button until it turned off, but when I tried to turn it back on, the green power light would come on, as would the orange light in the CD/DVD drive, but the screen was entirely black, as if the computer weren't active. I tried running the battery out and recharging it, but the same problem continues. I didn't detect any unusual heat or smell before the screen froze. I'm still under warranty if all else fails, but I'd like to resolve this on my own.
Just bought a Satellite & had same problem. Toshiba Support confirmed the 'Processor Power Management' fix. Within both the Min AND Max Processor State options you should set BOTH the Battery and Power Adapter options to 100%
Powered down, placed in freezer for less than five minutes, took it out, powered up, good to go.
I have this same problem no screen at all at bootup. This occurred after the external monitor was disconnected and the laptop screen will not come back on It's a Tosh PSPA3E about 2 years old no bios at startup but everything else appears normal hard drive light power light keyboard fine. Its not the inverter because the screen does blink at start up but remains black. Disconnected battery BIOS still no difference, all connectors are fine
Doubt if this problem really has a solution.
The Power management thing may be of little help but What am sure of is, if your Toshiba freezes, Just power it down and don't touch it for the next 2 days. Then after, boot it (don't press any other botton or it may hang) and if the blank screen still appears just leave it there for the next one hour and Your Computer back.
If it still doesn't come on @1hr, power is down again for another 2 days and repeat same.
This problem is as a result of heat and data collision in the processor. Low memory too will contribute to the problem.
On a Toshiba Satellite A 100, I as well had the black screen problem. I used the power management change instructions listed further up and it seems to work.

Bottom line they are saying try:
If you are running VISTA, try going to the Power Options, advanced options, processor power management, and change the value of the minimum processor state to 100%.
I just tried this myself so not sure if works or not but others had good results.

Just an fyi for others having the screen blank problem with their toshiba satellite; i was about to throw mine in the dumpster...had tried everything, then I realized that it might be something else.
I wear a magnetic bracelet for golf; I realized that this problem only happens when I am wearing the bracelet. Just a strange little coincidence that others might want to know about.
It has not happened since I took the bracelet off.
Most problems black screens are caused by blocket airiation
dust in fans wrong use (no flat underground) and direct sunlight direct on the laptop
The most common problem causing that is an unreadable section in your ram,
swap the ram and try again, if multiple cards run on one then on the other, one may be bad

I also have a toshiba satellite notebook, love the computer but after a while it just would shut off in the middle of serfing the web or just using the computer. I noticed it was running hot. If you turn over your computer you will notice two small fans on the underside, when you place your computer on a flat surface the fans cannot cool of the computer properly, thus it overheats and shut off. I simply went to my local HOME DEPOT and picked up a package SHEPHERD SURFACE GRIPS 1-1/2 inches or 38mm. They are caled anti skid pads, I placed them under the four pads/legs that was built into my computer. it raised the computer about a inch, no longer overheats and dosent shut off...problem fixed

it has loose connection on pcb ...on solder someware
if u push down with right side next to the video connector on pcb and turn on will power up with video...but if u let go it will cut off video ..it is not a inverter proble....

Yes I was in your position once with a brand new Toshiba satellite that
went black every so often. This is a process to fix it as described by
a Toshiba technition. If you don’t believe me or if you think this is
fishy call them yourself.
STEP1: shut down laptop.
STEP2: unplug charger if plugged in.
STEP3:remove battery. (use switches labeled 1 and 2)
STEP4: Hook up acadapter (charger)
STEP5:turn on computer with no battery, only using ac adapter.
STEP6:Go to control panel
STEP:7 On left click classic view
STEP8: Click POWER OPTIONS
STEP9: Under BALANCED click on CHANGE PLAN SETTINGS
STEP10: click CHANGE ADVANCED POWER SETTINGS
STEP 11: Scroll down and double click PROCESSOR POWER MANAGEMENT

The main cause for the Black Screen of Death error on your Toshiba Satellite A500 Series laptop might be the errors with the video adapter used on your laptop. You can fix the issue by rebooting the laptop in the Safe Mode. This will run the laptop without using the damaged driver and show the problems with it. If the laptop works properly in the Safe Mode, you can uninstall the video driver on your laptop to get away from the issues. You can use 'Device Manager' of the laptop for this purpose, as it brings up a list of all the currently available drivers as well as devices on your laptop.

second try unpluging and removing both batterys ur nicad and the internal lithium 1
this shuld force bios 2 reset
if u cannot locate the internal battery un plug power and batt
w8 aprox 3days the internal clock will drain it 4 u

this is a known problem with this laptop,
it`s vga card have some kind of a major problem . so u cant do it on your own , go and make them give u a new borad -any yea u should go get dell in the first place :P-

I've heard a lot about freezing problems on toshiba as well as others like this. Most common issues are one of two things. One is a damaged RAM module. The second is one of the video card chip sets have fried or are slightly overheating causing the laptop to shut down. Most common with Nvidea and ATI Radeon series graphics cards.

Yes! I'm having the same problem too. Its happened two times now in a matter of a week and i thought that my satellite laptop had just frozen, but the same thing happen to my computer. I would have to wait up to a full 24 hours to start the computer again.
I was working with my satelite A135 and slept off just to awake and behold a black screen. clt+Alt+del couldn't solve the problem so i powered it down with the power button. On trying to reboot, the green power ligth came on but The black screen was there to stay. up till date my labtop won't boot. Even shorting Jopen 1 couldn't solve the problem. I've since read that it could be a problem with the grounding tape they use to ground the screen to the frame, it is just sticky aluminum tape and comes loose.
I'm going to try the '24 hour on'' thing since I'm hoping it might not be the ground wire. Will get back.

Toshiba laptop (L25-S1216) wont start in any mode including safe mode. When you turn it on it goes to the "black choice of starting screen" and then just turns black and thats it.

I had that too and all i did was plugging unplugging A/C adapter. then press the 0 while at the same time press the power on button. did that as many as i can then suddenly the screen light up first with colors running wild. then press the pwoer button off then again press the 0 and at the same time switch the power on while holding down the 0 button..
