I just bought a new laptop so I could start using it for my embroidery designs with my Viking Rose. Currently I am using my old PC with windows XP for doing my 3d Embroidery. I downloaded the CD on my new laptop and all seemed fine except it doesn't recognize my dongle. Is there an update for this. Hate to think this is how they get you to buy new machines. Can't afford that. Can anyone help?

Try to install the software from the download as its latest version its will prompt you to remove the old version on your computer and follow onscreen instruction you be able to install the software...........

You may be able to find an old computer with Windows 95 or 98. Make sure that it also has a parallel port for the older R/W boxes.
You may also find that the 4D Embroidery package will do what you wish to do and it is under $400. 4D Embroidery Extra is the $700 package.
If you only want to put existing designs onto the card with no manipulation, you can get the Reader/Writer kit, $199 MSRP that includes Organizer which will allow you to load 1 design to your card at a time.
Unfortunately, System 5 was replaced by VIP which was replaced by 3D which was replaced by 4D. I don't think that system 5 will run on anything newer than Windows 98.

Ebay may have a laptop with win 98 but that is a pretty old OS. No way to register the software without contacting Viking to ask them to allow you to register her old software unless she sent you the reg numbers. She can't transfer ownership to you without those numbers on a certificate. Only originators of the software can allow you to do that by overriding her registration. Contact VSM and ask them if they will do this so you can use it.

Those floppy drives that require a dongle are really no good. The USB floppy drives are the way to go. Just plug and play. Here is a link to the USB floppy drives if interested. They start at around $8.00. If you want to stick with the floppy with the dongle, you might want to try running windows update. I didn't see where you posted the maker of the floppy drive or the dongle so getting the drivers or software is pretty much impossible.

The problem is that the software is so old it was written for 16-bit Windows 3.1 back in the early 1990s. Windows 95 and Windows XP maintained compatibility with that old software, but Windows 7 no longer does. A competent computer nerd could create a Virtual PC running Windows XP inside your Windows 7 box, and this would give you an environment in which to run your old software without keeping two computers around.

what do you mean by dongle. (vast meanings)
1: a code key. device, to prove owner ship of the ROSE.
2: a USB adapter device that allows Rose to talk to the PC.
the new PC is windows 10 right, unstated.
or old but new to you, no PC told. at all.
the software for XP is mostly never any good for w10, that is 20 year leap, 2001 to 2021.
ask them for the cure, using old software
now. only they know this, ask them,.
and save time and making wrong choices.

to run 2001 CD on new PC,
run the installer in w10 campatibility mode.
eg.
install.exe (or setup.exe)etc
right click the exe pick properties
click compat tab.
click run trouble shooter
fail that do same pick forced to XP SP3, +admin
