The tray for the dvd player runs along a track that is moved by gears. Something is obstructing the gears or motor that turns them thus your tray and door will not close all the way.
Best thing I can suggest is to buy a new one as having it repaired will not be worth the effort financially. Seeing as it is messed up you can play with it a little more in hopes it may get back on track and start working again.
Note: from personal experience the more you try and force it the worse the problem will become (Burn out the motor, damage the gears further).

When the motor stops in the down position, pull the emergency release handle. Push the door fully closed by hand then engage the emergency handle. Open the door with the remote and then close it with the remote to make sure the door closes completely.
It won't play for one of two reasons: 1. There is something inside the DVD player, which keeps it from playing. 2. The DVD player's battery has run out of juice and can no longer play, meaning the player needs to be replaced.
If the door does not close either something ( a coin or anything) got inside or there is a issue with the mechanism= alignment or possible bad part in that mechanism that loads and positions the disc.
A suggestion when door opens try to take a quick look inside with a flashlight to see what you can.
Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if it is bad. Tell me - if it won't open how do you know it won't close?
try to re start the power first to reset the supply in which the door unable to open and then push the open/close button to open the door. if still won't open maybe their is an stuck up at mechanical part, so turn off the player then use a Phillip screw driver to loosen the screws and to remove the cover of the DVD player .you can now access the disc mechanical assembly of your DVD player, remove the CD first and then check if the plastic gear is mis aligned or the the drive belt is broken.much better if you can apply silicon grease in plastic gear for smooth operation.then make sure the open/close button is ok, good luck and good day.
I had been closing the door at the DVD slot manually. I found that if I closed the DVD door with the close button, and then opened it with the open button, it no longer got stuck.
