With newer Canons you have to run a software program to "initialize" the board when you replace it. The board comes blank, and you have to add the program and settings to run the camera. The software also allows you to replace the serial numbers, do exposure and auto focus adjustments etc. Canon does not sell this proprietary software. You would have to send the camera to Canon and they would charge you the set repair price. Wish I had better news. But try adding the latest firmware. I am not sure if the 40D is the cutoff for this or it started with the 50D. You have to do this with all current Canon models.

Try doing a reset in the camera tools somewhere, this fixed a similar problem I had.
