Check the carbon brushes under the black side screw caps. Be aware that the brushes only fit ONE way, they are keyed on one corner. Check for broken wires under the back cover on the speed control plate.

It sounds like the attachments aren't aligning correctly. I had the same problem with a Kitchen Aid. The unit should be replaced as soon as possible so you don't end up paying for repairs.
I hope you didn't buy a new one, ours stopped last week after 25 years. All that was needed were new brushes for the motor. Anyone with a screwdriver could replace them. 4Kenwood had the parts to me in a couple of days.
